DENIS FILLION 1948 - 2016 It is with deep sadness the Fillion family announces the sudden passing of Denis Fillion on February 27, 2016. Denis, aka Papa Pooh's memory will be forever cherished by his son Cary Fillion, wife Dawn, and grandchildren Chelsea, Caitlin and Zak; and his daughter Kimberley, husband Tom Hanke, and grandchildren Brooke and Paige. Also surviving is Denis' partner Emie Intalin, and her family, his stepdaughter Cheryl and husband Ray Pirrie, stepdaughter Blue Intalin and partner Tony, and grandchildren A.J., Rhya and Ameena, and stepson Mark Intalin; Denis' brother Phillip Fillion, wife Shirley, and nephew Kris, wife Kelly and grandnieces Sydney and Bailey, his nephew Dustin, and niece Dawn and partner Ryan, and grandniece Emily; and brother Bernie Fillion and nephews Joel and Drew. Denis will also be fondly remembered by the Bill Murray Sr. family of Gilbert Plains. Dad was predeceased by our Memere Madeleine Fillion (nee Bouchard) on June 10, 2010. Denis was born in Winnipeg, MB on June 26, 1948 and raised by his mother Madeleine Fillion in Elie, MB amongst the hustle and bustle of her restaurant Mama's Inn. In 1967 he moved to Gilbert Plains with his mother and two brothers and worked in the café that his mother owned and operated. It is there that the new boy in town turned the head of Trudy Murray-Thomson and they married, moved to Winnipeg and from love raised their two children Cary and Kim. Denis began his working career at Harvey's Restaurant and went on to begin his love of the car business at Earl Heibert's Gulf Station, Landau Lincoln Mercury, Midtown Ford, and Nott Autocorp. Once retired, Denis loved spending time on the golf course including working as a starter at the Assiniboine Golf Club. Denis will be remembered for his amazing sense of humour, storytelling and genuine love of people...and of course sports. Denis and his brother Phil were the goaltending duo for the Dauphin Kings in their inaugural season in the MJHL in 1967. He coached his son Cary to four provincial baseball championships with the Isaac Brock Royals including three in a row. He also excelled at golf - winning the JJ Prairie Classic in Langdon, North Dakota a record four times! Denis was extremely proud to be a member of the 1995 World Men's Curling Championship Team, skipped by Kerry Burtnyk, Jeff Ryan (third), Rob Meakin (second) and Keith Fenton (lead). A Celebration of Denis' life was held at their home club The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club on March 7, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. His children Cary and Kim presented the Eulogy with their Dad's music playlist, memorabilia, picture slide show and special video message from Denis' favourite musician and friend Martyn Joseph. Interment took place on March 8, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Kim recited the Lord Is My Shepherd and Cary sang Harry Chapin's, Cat's In the Cradle. When you comin' home son, I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad We're gonna have a good time then!!

  • Thank you all for the kind words, today was the first time I came back and looked at this and I know how much Denny affected from your comments so thank you again. I always thought it was just some cheesy cliche but I think of Dad each and every single day and would do anything for one last round of golf with him to tell him even more than I already did. - Posted by: Cary Fillion (Son) on: Sep 16, 2016

  • I worked alongside with Dennis at Earl's Gulf( The Academy), where Dennis was the long term lead employee and who handled the day to day matters ever so efficiently in times of Earl's absence. Dennis was a key employee , who carried himself with pride and for many years was the hub of service. Dennis modeled a work template at the Academy for others to observe and conform to and by doing so did leave his mark on the shop and the business in terms of expectations of standards. - Posted by: Dave Carnochan (Former Co-Worker) on: Mar 13, 2016

  • The service for your dad was a great tribute to Denis. I remember always running into Denis at Polo Park bowling alley. He would venture across the way from Landau to play pinball. I'd alway check to see if he was there every time I was at Polo Park. Denis was a great man and a great mentor to many. I will sadly miss you Denis. May you Rest in Peace. I will see you on the other side. - Posted by: Jeff Sweetland (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2016
