Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEWART ROSS KING Ross, 79, peacefully left us Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in his home in Rancho Mirage, California. His beloved wife of 59 years, Elaine, was by his side. Ross was born June 23, 1936 in the Pas, Manitoba to Stewart and Rene King. His early childhood was spent there and in Flin Flon where Ross enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and summers at Clearwater Lake. The family moved to Winnipeg when Ross was 16 where he attended Kelvin High School. He played center for the Kelvin Clippers football team and later the Winnipeg Rods where he was part of the team that won the Canadian Championships in 1955 and 1956. The team was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for their achievements. Ross attended the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Science and was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Ross headed north again to work on the DEW Line as a heavy equipment operator. He returned to Winnipeg in 1957 to begin working as an optician in the family business, Stewart N King. Ross and Elaine were married November 2, 1957. Ross was an entrepreneur driving his family optical business to a significant Canadian presence and changing the face of the industry with the launch of Shoppers Optical and optical price advertising. Ross was a founding member of the Vision Council of Canada and sat on the board of Laurentian Life Insurance. Ross was known and respected as a man of honour and integrity. Ross will be remembered for his dry wit and sense of humour, his generosity and his c'est la vie attitude towards life. Ross was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife Elaine; his children, Blain (Barb), Lisa Paterson (Andrew); his grandchildren, Marc (Carolyn), Kiera (Matthew), Leanne, Rhys, Justin (Corinne), Shane (Kate), Kaleigh (Eric); his great-grandson Donald; and his sister Betsy Elliot. Ross was happiest and most content enjoying his family. Rest well. We love you very much and will miss and remember you always. The values you lived by and taught us remain within us. You live in our hearts. A celebration of Ross's life will be held Wednesday May 4 at St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society (204)-982-2041 or The Western Canada Aviation Museum (204)-786-5503.

Ross was one of the finest men we have ever met. While he was an excellent businessman, he was also a man of great humour and an instinct for fairness. These are attributes which his immediate family, Blain and Lisa have adopted. It is a great tribute to his memory that all who knew him hold him in such high regard. Ever to be missed by us all. The grandchildren have a great role model. None better! - Posted by: Abe and Barbara Anhang (Friend, consultant, confidante) on: May 01, 2016

I am sorry to hear of Ross' passing. My wife Sue was visiting my aunt Betsy when we heard about about Ross. I'm not a relative but I have met him several times at family functions for my aunt. His life, family, achievements and travel were always interesting to hear about. Blessings and my thoughts to the family. - Posted by: Ted Elliott (Nephew of Ross's sister Betsy) on: Apr 10, 2016

My sincere condolences to the King family on the loss of a great man. Mr. King, as I will always refer to him, gave me the most memorable years of my long career in the Optical industry. I feel very blessed to have been part of the King Optical Group family. He was truly a giant of a man in so many ways, including his generous heart. He gave me many opportunities to learn and grow and always listened to the voice of his employees. I have many fond memories of our chats in the stores and at our head office on St. James street. His influence on all of us will last forever. - Posted by: Debbie Jones (Moszynski) (Employee/Friend) on: Mar 26, 2016
