ELFRIEDE HELEN HIEBERT (nee SIEMENS) 1940 - 2016 After a short and brutal illness, Elfriede passed away on March 12, 2016. She was born in Southern Manitoba on July 21, 1940 to Justina and John Siemens of Horndean. Elfriede, known to many as Fritz and her older brother, John R. (Katie), were brought up on a farm, in a Mennonite community, surrounded by love and strong values. Fritz became a registered nurse, graduated 1962 and worked 25 years in the emergency department at the Victoria General Hospital. There she made many friends among her co-workers, and she nurtured and maintained strong relationships that have lasted a lifetime. Fritz married Donald Hiebert, of Horndean, May 1963 and together they raised two children: Joanne (Hans-Joerg Schmidt, Germany) and Gordon (Lori O'Brien, Calgary). Their lives brought them to Winnipeg where the family grew, lived life, loved and flourished. Fritz was able to enjoy a very independent lifestyle and good health, travel and lots of outdoor physical activity. She had a wide circle of good friends and particularly enjoyed time with her grandchildren: Robert, Johanna and Emilie. She was predeceased by her husband, Don (1986), second husband, Joe Tronrud (1990) and son, Gordon (2004). Fritz maintained and enjoyed a close, loving relationship with her stepson, Joel LeClerc (Nicole) and their children, Logan and Collette. Fritz's favourite colour was blue. She was a lover of Life and all it had to offer. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Canad Inns Destination Centre Fort Garry, 1824 Pembina Hwy. Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • My wife Robbie was a nursing classmate and she and Fritz maintained an ongoing close relationship over the years. We fondly remember driving out to Lockport following their nursing graduation party for our first "all nighter" together. Fritz was a member of our wedding party 53 years ago, and Robbie was her Maid of Honour earlier that same summer. We sincerely appreciated Fritz and Don becoming Godparents for our twins and more recently the support that Fritz provided as Robbie's vision declined. Fritz was a one-of-a-kind person who was the hit of every gathering. She lived life to the full, and our world was a better place with her in it. Rest well, dear friend... you will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Roberta and Charles Brown (Friends) on: Mar 30, 2016

  • Elfriede is my (Hedy's) cousin. I saw her at McNally's last December, still looking fit and friendly, giving me the same bright and ready smile I remember since we were children, visiting in each other's homes. The next time I saw her, she had just come home from the hospital, giving me that same smile, even while bravely telling me she had only a short while left on this earth. Elfriede your determination to face life's difficulties with courage and optimism has been an inspiration to us, as has your courage and the rallying of your family and friends in these last difficult days. You are loved and will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Hedy and John Martens (Cousin) on: Mar 28, 2016

  • We met Don and Fritz(Elfriede) in 1979 on a Caribbean Cruise. We immediately clicked with them. So started the friendship - we made several trips with Don and Fritz before he passed away. Over the years we maintained a friendship with Fritz and her family. We visited with her last summer to celebrate our 75th birthdays. I admired Fritz strength and valued her friendship. Our condolences to Fritz's family - we have had an opportunity to meet a lot of them over the last 37 years. So sad we will miss you friend. Love you! - Posted by: Larry & Mina Ostergard (friend) on: Mar 24, 2016

  • Elfriede and I were classmates/friends from Grades 1 through 8 in our 3 room school in Horndean. Miss Agnes Wiebe and Mrs. Elizabeth Peters were our learning guides all the way. We skipped grade 6 together too. She was the best!! Sorry for your loss, may God give comfort and strength. - Posted by: Anne Wiebe Nee Zacharias () on: Mar 21, 2016

  • Fritz may have gone, but I am so very lucky. She will often be in my thoughts....each time I open my recipe book. There's Fritz's bar-b-cue sauce, Fritz's Christmas Cake and Fritz's German "pepper nuts" (to name a few) She was a wonderful friend. To Fritz's family....I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. - Posted by: Carmen Stewart (Friend) on: Mar 20, 2016

  • Our sympathies to Joanne and family. Fritz, as we knew her, was the life of our cycling group. She was loved and she will be sorely missed. We were shocked by her unexpected illness and helplessly distressed by her suffering during her last days. Rest in peace! - Posted by: Roswitha & Camille Dessureault (Cycling Friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • Fritz was a great neighbour who was always out working in the yard or helping shovel someone else's driveway. I envied her energy level and admired her zest for life. Walking past her empty house fills me with sadness. The neighbourhood will not be the same without her. My heartfelt thoughts go out to her family. - Posted by: Tracy Szumlak (neighbour) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • Fritz was such a lovely woman and was very well liked! She was always out and about, always active, she made us youngsters look bad ;) Whenever I drove down the street or walked by when she was outside she always said hello or waved with a big smile. She will be greatly missed by all of us that is for sure, but she will never ever be forgotten! My sincerest condolences to her family and friends. We lost a wonderful neighbour and our street will never be the same without you. It breaks my heart that you're gone :( Rest in Paradise xo - Posted by: Maddison Szumlak (neighbor) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • So shocked and saddened to hear about Fritz's passing. At Xmas she was so upbeat and no sign of any illness. Our deepest thoughts go out to you Joanne and family. We are in Arizona so will not be able to attend service. - Posted by: Ramona and Ernie Bias (Friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • Fritz was so very special; she made the world a better place and will be sorely missed. Condolences to her family. We never met them, but her family stories were always filled with joy and love and caring. You will always remain in our thoughts, dear friend. - Posted by: Les and Audrey Anderson (Friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • I cannot believe Fritz is no longer with us. I left Winnipeg on Dec 31st and Fritz was her usual vibrant and fun loving person. She had a special bond with my partner, Don, and he loved to call her 'Esmerelda'. Don and I did not get a chance to visit or talk with her during her illness - we will alway remember her as our special friend and biking buddy. • She loved my nephew Joel + his wife Nicole as her own son and was an "Oma" to their children. She was always there for him, and for that I am forever grateful. Our love to you Joel, Nicole, Logan and Collette. Auntie Claire - Posted by: Claire Sutton (my nephew's step mom) on: Mar 19, 2016
