Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVA (EVELYN) LAZARUK (née BATENCHUK) 1932 - 2016 Passed away peacefully at age 83 on Holy Saturday, March 26, 2016, surrounded by her children, after a lengthy illness. Eva was born in Vidir, MB, and raised on the homestead farm near Arborg. She is survived by Cindy, Wonita (Victor), Susan, Linda (Mark), all of British Columbia, David of Winnipeg and grandsons Matthew and Liam, and predeceased by husband Alexander in 1966, son-in-law Tony, and 11 siblings. Eva moved to Winnipeg at 16 and worked in various jobs, including at a chocolate factory and sorting eggs. She and Al met at a dance and were married within months, in 1956. After a brief relocation to British Columbia, they settled in Winnipeg to raise their five children. As a single mother and homeowner, Eva worked at Eaton's, the YWCA, Sears Warehouse, Safeway, Boeing and Sharon Home, and she often worked cleaning and catering jobs on the side. Eva loved to sew and even sewed her own winter coat with a fur collar, cooked everything from scratch, grew her own vegetables and canned them, loved berry-picking and making jam, painted and wallpapered her own house, took a course to fix her own car, collected rainwater to wash her hair, bowled in a five-pin bowling league and attended St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, where she earned her Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada 15-year pin. Resurrectional Matins and Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave., 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 1. Interment will take place at Holy Family Cemetery on Saturday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. The family is eternally grateful to the many loving and caring staff at Holy Family Home, where she lived since 2011. A beautiful story of a beautiful person. Cindy, Wonita, Susie, Linda and David - Brian, Davis and I are deeply saddened by your loss. I know that your Mom was a pillar of strength for all of you. She raised five wonderful and caring children that in many ways exhibit her grace, sense of humour, and sheer determination. She always had a big smile and great food on the table, welcoming guests into your home. And, I loved to hear her infectious laugh. May she rest in peace as she joins your Dad in heaven.
