CATHERINE (KAY) ETHEL JUSKOW (KERR) On March 18, 2016, Catherine peacefully left this world just a few weeks shy of her 98th birthday. Kay was born to George and Sadie Kerr (Cumming) on April 5, 1918 in Eureka, Nova Scotia. Her mother died when she was quite young and she lived with various relatives and friends until she finished her schooling. Kay was predeceased by her loving husband John in 2010; her parents and stepmother Jennie Kerr; brothers, Oliver and Jack; sister Evelyn; and brother-in-law Bob Ward. She is survived by stepsons, Allan (Lynda), David (Cathy); her grandchildren, Shawn, Sheryl Bohonis (Darrin) and Ryan; as well as her great-grandchildren, Aidan and Kaitlyn. Also left to mourn her passing are her sisters, June Ward and Betty Brown (Norman); brother-in-law Mervyn Phillips; and sister-in-law Kay Kerr, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kay knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nurse and in 1944 she achieved that goal graduating from Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She moved to Toronto and obtained post grad training to work in the operating room. In 1950, she moved to Winnipeg to serve with the Department of Veterans Affairs at Deer Lodge Hospital. She remained active in the Operating Room until her retirement in 1978. While there she had many cherished friendships which she maintained throughout her life. Kay and John were married in 1973. Although they came together later in life, they made the most of every minute, spending the summers at their cottage in Brereton Lake and the winters travelling the world or relaxing in Cathedral City. Kay was a devoted wife and a kind and gentle soul, who was always busy with something as she hated to have "idle hands". She loved to bowl, dance and do needlework, as well as have get-togethers with the family. She was always quick to smile or laugh and met any adversity head on with her calm, level-headed resolve. The family would like to thank Dr. Katecha and staff of the 3rd floor at Oakview Place, especially nurse Susan, for the care and compassion they provided. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral. A private graveside service will be held with immediate family only, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
