ISRAEL JOSEPH LEIBL Joe was born in Winnipeg and moved to Shaunavon, SK at a young age. He grew up on a farm and attended a country school. He received most of his Jewish education from a local tailor named Ben Snider. At the age of 13 he returned to Winnipeg where he attended school until Grade 11 and then began working in his father's tire company. In 1941 he joined the army where he remained for five years. In 1942 he met and married his wife of 49 years, Doris (Denny) Cohen in London, England. She arrived in Canada a few months after Joe was released from the army. In 1947 they became the proud parents of their only child, Sandra. Joe went back to work at his father's tire company. After his dad passed in 1952, Joe sold the business to his brother Louis. They worked together until Joe retired in 1972. He became a grandfather to Michelle in 1973 and was very proud to show her off to his friends. After a while he decided to work periodically for Louis and tried to make his fortune at the casino. Although not formally educated in Judaism, he felt a strong bond to his faith and its history. He and Denny went to Israel in the early 1990s and worked planting trees for three months. In his later years he shared a close relationship with his brother Louis and Joe's friend Estelle. He had a special bond with his son-in-law Jim. He is survived by his daughter Sandi James (Jim), granddaughter Michelle Daigle (Adrien), great-granddaughter Lauren, sister Mary Dorfman, and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his sister Dena Yaskiel, and his brother Louis Leibl. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Simkin Centre for their excellent care and consideration throughout his stay there. Funeral took place April 7, 2016 at Rosh Pina Memorial Park.
