KENNETH JAMES PROCTOR (HANDSOME KEN) April 15, 1934 - April 9, 2016 It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Ken was predeceased by his parents, James and Mina Proctor; stepmother Jessie; brothers, Jack and George, and brother-in-law Ed. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Myrna; daughter Karen (Gordon) Bell; son Kurt (Mellissa) Proctor; grandchildren, Lauren and Kelsey (Ashton) Bell, and Jordon (Brittany), Mitchell (Maddie) and Haley Proctor; sister Isabel; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Beth Proctor, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Ken was born and raised in Winnipeg, where he attended Principal Sparling, Strathcona and Tec Voc schools and played for their basketball teams. At age 14, Ken was in an accident that changed the course of his life -- Myrna ran into him with her bike. Since that first run in brought them together, they were inseparable. They married in 1956 and became parents to Karen and Kurt. Ken worked at the Welcome Inn early on before starting at C.N.R., where he worked until his retirement for 37 years later. Ken enjoyed many side projects, the most memorable ones included building their home on River Road in St. Andrews, and the family cabin at Betula Lake, where he loved fishing, blueberry picking and playing cards with good company. Ken relished playing golf with his foursome, snowmobiling with the Springhill Trailblazers, cheering on his grandchildren, nieces and nephews at their many activities, going on gambling trips, watching the Jets, Bombers, Red Wings and Sioux, and woodworking at Elmwood Senior Centre. Although he was a self-proclaimed "Scotsman", Ken was very generous. He volunteered at East End Community Club, First Transcona Scout Troop, and Calvary Place, calling bingo; where he received an award for 10 years of service. Ken's zest for life took him on many adventures, from cruises and camping trips, to visiting family in Western Canada and across the pond in Scandinavia. Ken's infectious smile and quick wit made a lasting impression on so many lives, and provided us with memories that we will cherish forever. Special thanks to Dr. Harvey Lee and the caring staff on 3 West at Concordia Hospital. In keeping with Ken's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at Wheeler Funeral Home at 1800 Day St., Winnipeg on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to D'Arcy's Animal Rescue Centre, 730B Century St., Winnipeg, MB R3H 0M1. "Although he has gone, we will always be together and his spirit will live on in each one of us forever." Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • To Myrna, Curt, Karen, and family, Sorry to hear about your loss. I’m working overseas right now in the Middle East, or I certainly would have attended his service. Last time I spent time with Ken was at my father’s second wedding and we went to Assiniboine Downs to watch the Triple Crown Race and have a drink. In some ways, I feel that grew up with Ken because of all the frequent visits stemming from Myrna and her relationship with my mom and Uncle K. He was always very gentle and kind, but it was funny to watch him boil up a few times over an issue or situation. We, Marshalls are certainly not perfect so he had to practice his patience around us. I greatly respected him for being committed to family, which was certainly evident when he took in his mother-in -law into his home for so many years. Myrna, count your numerous blessings to had Ken as your husband for so many years and cherish the memories and many stories which will never fade. I’m praying for you and your family during this most difficult time. The Marshalls will always be there for the Proctors, so remember that, if you ever need anything. God Bless all of you. - Posted by: Brian Marshall (Friend of the family) on: Jun 02, 2016

  • Sometimes, if we are lucky, special people come into our lives. That's what happened in 2003 when my spouse Erwin & I met Ken & Myrna Proctor, Mary & Ken Wilks, & Gerry & Maxine Nickel who were all friends and swim buddies in the Selkirk Comprehensive School Swim Pool. They welcomed us at the time to join them after swim at MacDonald's for coffee & muffins; a friendship was born. Since then we have lost Gerry, Erwin & Mary, and now sadly "Handsome" Ken. From 8 we are now 4. In 2012 I met & married my wonderful husband Gary whom the group readily embraced and we continued where we had left off with wonderful good times & camaraderie. Life goes on with sadness in our hearts & memories that last forever thanks to friends like Ken & Myrna. Friendship lasts forever. • Thanks to Ken, Myrna, Kurt & Mitsy for many wonderful memories at your homes and cottage over the years. Always a great time to be had fishing, golfing or waterskiing, or playing card. - Posted by: Rick Robertson (Family friend) on: Apr 13, 2016

  • We enjoyed many snowmobile outings with Ken & Myrna. Those were the days, when life was much slower & a wiener roast in the bush was so much fun, as well as all of the Halloween parties with Ken dressing up & enjoying life to the fullest. Who can forget the parties in our shop with all the kids. Ken was right in the middle of it all. Good memories. We will never forget. - Posted by: Norm & Marilyn Chubey (Friends & fellow Trailblazers) on: Apr 13, 2016
