DANIEL KRISTJAN DANIELSON
Date of Passing: Apr 14, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL KRISTJAN DANIELSON Peacefully, with family by his side, Daniel passed away at the age of 94 years on April 14, 2016. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Hergeir and Kristjana Danielson, brothers Leo and Baldwin, and sisters Laufey, Margaret, Herdis and Sigrun. Dad will be lovingly remembered by Debra (Kirk), Daneesa, Tammy, Josh (Katrina), Gabrielle (Dallas), Nicolas, Gracie-Lee, Belle, Ashley and Logan, as well as his many nieces and nephews and their families. He was looking forward to the arrival this summer of great-grandson Leif. Dad was born the youngest of seven on July 7, 1921. He spent his early years on the family farm at Otto (Lundar), Manitoba where he attended Rocky Hill School. The family spoke Icelandic and Dad remained connected to his Icelandic heritage throughout his life. After leaving the farm, Dad worked for his brother Leo driving for Lundar Transfer. He later owned and operated Lundar Electric and worked at Baker Lake NWT, Churchill, Grand Rapids, Gillam, Jenpeg and Winnipeg. One of our fondest memories is going to the post office to mail a letter to Dad and often, happily, finding one in return. Dad married our mother, Dorothea McKay, in 1955. Together they raised their family in Lundar, Gillam and Winnipeg. After their divorce Mom and Dad's relationship was one of friendship and respect. We appreciated this as we all celebrated special occasions together. After his retirement, Dad returned to live in Lundar. There he enjoyed friends and family, hunting, being involved with the Elks, the Lundar Goose Shoot or anything else that was going on in town. He took particular interest in a pioneer cemetery where his Icelandic ancestors were buried. Dad and Dennis Johnson worked to locate and mark the graves and to commemorate those buried there with a plaque. Dad loved music. He learned to play by ear when he was a boy on the pump organ at his country church. The effects of having to put that much effort into his play continued once he switched to piano. He rocked the house. Over the years Dad played at many parties accompanied by his friends on the fiddle and guitar. Living to the age of 94 and in spite of health challenges, Dad maintained a youthful and enthusiastic approach to life. He was always engaged, learning and building new friendships. He had a great sense of humour and we all got a kick out of him. He always enjoyed hockey, but even more so after the Jets returned to Winnipeg. Dad was a family man who, without saying much, made us feel loved and supported. The family would like to thank Dr. Frederick Ross; Dr. Herman Lam and Lorraine from the Renal Clinic at HSC; and the doctors and staff at the HSC Central Dialysis Unit, for the care Dad received. Thank you also to Amelita, Emelita, Joy, Laura, Romeo, Linda and Danielle for your care and support that allowed Dad to remain in his home and close to his friends. Thank you also to Dad's friends and neighbours, Art, Len and Ray. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lundar Lutheran Church, 16 First Avenue, Lundar, Manitoba, with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Stony Hill Otto Church, c/o Box 225, Lundar, Manitoba, R0C 1Y0. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com
