JULIETTE SABOT On April 6, 2016, our dear friend and sister, Juliette, left us from her home, with family by her side. Juliette leaves behind her partner and dearest friend of 47 years, Sally Perchaluk; sisters, Eveline, Irene, Jeannette (Rosaire Grenier); and brother Marcel; sisters-in-law, Marika, Susie (Jim Sturney); brother-in-law Paul Perchaluk (Sally Courchene); and cousin Brian. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and longtime friends also grieve her passing. Juliette was predeceased by her parents, Leopold and Rosa Sabot; baby sister Lina; brothers, Donat and wife Lina, George and wife Eveline; sister Angelina (Toutone) and husband Emile Laurin; sister-in-law Monique Sabot; and brothers-in-law, Eugene Saindon, Frank Baron and Marcel Nault. Juliette grew up in Richer, Manitoba. Following a two-year interval, during her high school years to manage her parents store, Juliette completed her high school education in St. Anne, Manitoba. Upon graduating from the University of Manitoba, Juliette worked for several years at the Manitoba Metis Federation. Juliette began her teaching career in Vogar, Manitoba, where she taught the first nursery and kindergarten program. Her career with Manitoba Education and Training spanned three decades, beginning in 1975, with her appointment as Early Childhood Education Consultant and coordinator of the Headstart Program, until her retirement in 2003, as Director of Aboriginal Education Directorate. During her tenure, she was dedicated to supporting and enhancing the learning of Metis and First Nations children in provincial schools throughout the North, the Interlake and inner city Winnipeg. Her expertise and quiet caring ways won her the respect and affection of everyone she worked with - students, parents, teachers and Manitoba Education colleagues. Along with her time at the Department, Juliette also served on various boards including the Native Women's Transition Centre and Rossbrook House. One of her many awards included the Community Vision Award, which she received at the Thunderbird House Graduation ceremony in 2001. From the time of her retirement on, Juliette relished the seclusion of her life at the cottage, the quiet winters where she could indulge her voracious appetite for reading, and the not so quiet summers where family and friends took center stage. Many will remember Juliette's wonderful cooking, her long, engaging hours of child's play and hospitality without measure. Along with others, very many nieces and nephews held Juliette in high regard. They shared a deep bond of mutual respect, more often than not accompanied by a sustained humour. The family wishes to acknowledge the medical team of Dr. Laurie Ireland, Dr. Kerr Graham, Laura Klammer, Carol Gwizdak and Vera Appleyard, for their dedication and support as they accompanied us on this journey. Juliette, you will always live in our hearts. There will be no service. A gathering of family and friends will happen at a later date.

I was just speaking today to my granddaughter about some of my friends in high school. Juliette's name came up and I "googled" her name. To Sally, she was a beautiful person and had a beautiful soul. She was my friend. Thinking of her not in the world truly makes me sad. My heart goes out to you. God bless you and her memory. - Posted by: Suzanne (Ragot) Wood (Friend and schoolmate) on: Oct 04, 2016

I met Julie as a colleague in the Curriculum and Program Development and Support Services of Manitoba Department of Education in the 1970s. Later we met in community settings devoted to celebrating and sharing the Metis and aboriginal cultures. Though it has been some years since that time, Julie's warm smile and friendly hugs remain bright in my memory. She was a true friend of her Metis people and she welcomed others, like me, into her circle with kindness and respect. Juliette's unwavering commitment to the gift of education in building a spirit of reconciliation and peace in Manitoba was groundbreaking. Good work my dear friend. - Posted by: Laura Steiman Shofley (Department of Education former colleague and community activist friend) on: Apr 19, 2016

My sincere condolences to Sally as well as Juliette's family and friends. Juliette was my Director for a few years. She was a great boss and mentor. The way she explained things to me in our work, made me think rather than just do. I enjoyed her sense of humor and I was appreciative of her friendship. She invited me into her home, as well as the cottage - providing fabulous food and sharing stories that filled our short visits with engaging conversation. I will always remember her kindness. I will never forget you Juliette. - Posted by: Sheila Redsky (Colleague and friend) on: Apr 16, 2016
