PETER LEOCHKO
Born: Oct 15, 1921
Date of Passing: Apr 20, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER LEOCHKO October 15, 1921 - April 20, 2016 Peacefully, with family by his side, Peter passed away at Deer Lodge Centre after a brief illness. He was the only son of Ignatius Leochko (who tragically passed away when Dad was only four) and Evdokia Horodeski. Peter leaves to mourn his passing, daughter Doreen MacLean (Jerry), her daughter Melanie (Brian) and great-grandsons, Adam and Shane; daughter Janette Stephenson and her sons, Matthew and Jared. He is also survived by his sister Helen Wallach and brothers, John, Bill (Louise) and Marvin (Elsie) Marykuca; as well as many nieces, nephews and several cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ethel; son Jim; brothers, Steve and Mike Marykuca. As a youngster, Dad worked on the family farm, trapped, and kept his mother supplied with berries for canning. He left home at 15, and after a brief sojourn at a Bible School, rode the rails looking for work. Dad worked as a ranch/farm hand and a lumberjack before joining the military during the Second World War, after which he trained as a carpenter. His work took him to many places in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and the North West Territories. He often was put into positions of authority because of his intelligence and strong work ethic. Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Manitoba. He was also a great storyteller and was known for his wit and sense of humour. He will be missed. A family burial will be held at Poplarfield Cemetery on Saturday, April 30, 2016, followed by a memorial reception for family and friends at Poplarfield Community Centre at 1:00 p.m. If you so wish, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Peter's memory may be made to Deer Lodge Centre or a charity of your choice. A very grateful thank you to the wonderful staff on T4 at Deer Lodge for the loving care they gave our father. A special thank you to all who have extended their love, compassion and support. My children though grown with families of their own, still talk about the fun they had in Poplar Field with Aunty Ethel and Uncle Peter...hayride with the tractor, shooting at tins with the pellet gun, pulling fresh vegetables for dinner..always an interesting or funny tale to tell.Uncle Peter still managed a joke or two even when he wasn't well...something to make you chuckle. My sympathy to the family but a life well lived is to be celebrated. May you find peace in remembering all those precious moments.Hugs Kathy - Posted by: Kathy Guillemette (Niece) on: Apr 29, 2016
