HARRY COHEN It is with great heartache we announce the passing of Harry Cohen, born March 7, 1923 to Esther and Jack Cohen in Manchester, England. He leaves behind his beautiful wife Stella, of 66 years, sister Florence (Cyril deceased), daughters Karen and Kay, sons-in-law Derek and Larry, grandchildren Gabriel (Jackie), Kacee (Randy), Kale (Alanna), and great-grandchildren Wylie and Anna. He worked in the factories to support his family during the Depression and was called to war in Burma when he was 18. Due to the war, his aspirations for playing soccer for Manchester City were never realized. However, he played soccer most of his life as well as coached and started one of the first soccer clubs in Manitoba - St. James United. He coached and refereed till he was in his 70s and continued to be an enthusiastic supporter. He immigrated with his wife and daughters to Canada in 1959 to start a new life. For 28 years, he worked for the Winnipeg Transit System, where he went from bus driver to president and business agent. During this time, he was instrumental in attaining improvements in working conditions of the A.T.U. members, which still stand to this day. He passionately believed in and advocated for the rights of the working class. He and Stella moved to West Vancouver in 1990. He continued to enjoy all his passions including soccer, snooker and swimming. To the very last, he remained animated and engaged with everyone in his life. He lived his life with passion, love and caring. He will be forever in our hearts. There will be a celebration of life at the ATU Office, 104 - 275 Broadway on Friday, May 13, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for transit and colleagues. • My Gonga, as we called you.. You were something so special, especially to me, being your only granddaughter. So many people knew you, respected you, and you never tried to be better than anyone, always helped when and where you could, pointing people in the right direction, being a leader. Thank you for being the father you were to my mother, so she could be the most amazing mother in the entire world to Kale and I. I'm so grateful you were able to know and love my children as well.. They will have only fond memories of 'Gonga' .. I love you so much forever and always, and every time I get in the old Cutlass to take the kids out for a Sunday cruise, I'll be thinkin' of you..<3 - Posted by: Kacee (Granddaughter) on: May 13, 2016

  • My condolences go to Stella and family. Harry was one of a kind. He was a solid trade unionist who represented his members very well for many years garnering their respect and admiration. As a young trade unionist I learned much from Harry and appreciated his friendship over the years prior to his well deserved retirement. - Posted by: Susan Hart-Kulbaba (coworker) on: May 07, 2016

  • I first met Harry at the age of 12. He had a big impact on me. Bold, honest, engaging and loving. Even though Harry did many things on a big scale that impact the lives of many today, it is the simple things that stand out for me the most. Watching him enthusiastically coaching the soccer team my boyfriend was on, picking me up on the transit bus and the numerous times interacting with us friends when we were over with Kay at the house...You were bigger than life Harry and will hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for being who you were and not afraid to show it. I Love you, Deb - Posted by: Debra Dandeneau (Dear friend ) on: May 07, 2016
