NATALIE (NETTIE) LACOMBE (nee DOWBENKO) It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Natalie (Nettie) LaCombe, beloved mother, aunt, grandmother and baba. Nettie passed away peacefully in her home on May 2, 2016 at the age of 99, surrounded by her family. Nettie was predeceased by her husband, Joe in 1969, father, Dan in 1975, mother, Kay in 1982, brother, Harry in 2000, and sister, Stephie in 2008. Nettie was born in Winnipeg in 1916 and lived her entire life in North Winnipeg. She was a lifetime member of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church and loved to sing in the church choir. Nettie was one of the first founding members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. She loved to teach catechism, accompany the Ukrainian dancers on the piano, and make perogies with the church ladies. Baba enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed all her visits with her son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as visits by friends and family. She looked forward to large family gatherings, especially Christmas, Easter and birthdays. Preparing Babka and decorating traditional Easter eggs on Good Friday with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren was one of her favourite days. She could always be found at the kitchen table hand-feeding her beloved parrot, Jo-jo whom she doted over and talked to daily. Baba taught us all many life lessons and was always there to cheer you up or talk through problems. She had amazing wit and memory better than anyone in her family. She knew exactly where every item was supposed to be in her kitchen, bedroom drawers, etc. Left behind to cherish her memory and mourn her passing are: her only child Bert (Wanda) LaCombe, grandchildren Cindy (Barry) Kasprick, Terry (Kent) Hickman, and Rob (Deb) LaCombe, great-grandchildren, Jennifer Kasprick, Michael Kasprick, Kyla LaCombe, Mandy (Daniel) Hale, and Justice Hickman, great-great-grandson, Josef Hickman, sisters-in-law, Lillian Dowbenko and Anne Lacomy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pallbearers will be Rob LaCombe, Kent Hickman, Mike Kasprick, Justice Hickman, Dan Dowbenko and Greg Chartier. Rosary Service will be Sunday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. followed by Prayers at 8:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be Monday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. All services will take place at the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Avenue in Winnipeg, with Father Volodymyr Bashutskyy officiating. The family would like to thank Sheri Smyth and Susan Nott for their long term, dedicated care to Baba. We would also like to thank the numerous home care workers and other nurses who have cared for and helped our Baba over the years. Vichnaya Pamyat Eternal Memory! Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
