MARVIN GEORGE KRAWEC It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Marvin Krawec, aged 79, on May 16, 2016, at Portage General Hospital in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Born June 3, 1936 in Rorketon Manitoba, Marvin was the 13th of 15 children. He was predeceased by his parents, Michal and Michalena (Chornoboy) Krawec; his brothers Nick, Harry, Steve and John Krawec; his sisters Helen Shemanski, Mary Krawec, Ann Malazdrewicz and Vickie Brown; and his mother-in-law Norma MacDonald, who truly became his Mom'. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 50 years, Connie Krawec (nee MacDonald); his sons Mark (Deborah) and Patrick (Tara); his grandson Gabriel; his brothers Sam (Jean), Martin (Helen), Alex (Shirley) and Peter Krawec; his sisters Olga Lupkowski and Jean Krawec; his sisters-in-law Mary Krawec and Lena Krawec; his godchildren Cindy Nachtigall, Marianne Mummery and Kelly Verwey; the members of his gigantic and loving extended family; and his many friends, colleagues and former students. Marvin attended Weiden School (Manitoba), Rorketon High School (Manitoba), St. Joseph's (Yorketon, SK), Manitoba Teachers' College, the University of Guelph and the University of Laval. In 1974 Marvin and Connie moved to Portage la Prairie, where he taught at Crescentview School for 22 years until his retirement in 1996. Marvin was always very active in the community. He served on many boards over the years, including: Manitoba Teachers' College (student body President); Portage la Prairie School Division (Trustee); Retired Teachers' Association of Manitoba (President); Portage Regional Library Board (Chair); Southport Aerospace Board (Vice Chair); Koko Platz Community Club (President); Canadian Mental Health Association (Executive Policy Committee member for the province of Manitoba); Portage-Lisgar Federal Liberal Association (President, Treasurer); Portage la Prairie Provincial Liberal Association (President); and Friends of MDC (Chair). All children loved Marvin. He was a natural entertainer, who loved singing, playing guitar and telling jokes. He enjoyed baseball and curling. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and loved the Ukrainian language, music and stories. He was a caring teacher who made his students feel important - and they were. Marvin was a good man in every sense of the word and an important influence in so many lives. He was always generous with his time and eager to assist when others needed a helping hand. He was very precious to us all. We will never forget him. A Funeral Service will be held at Good Shepherd Church, 1125 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, on Wednesday, May 25 at 4:00 p.m., with Reverend Gerald Langevin officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marvin's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 103 Wilkinson Cres., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I met Connie & Marvin through the Liberal Party where we were working wanting to help make a difference in our Province. Marvin was a great guy to work with, very knowledgeable and full of energy. I haven't seen Marvin for a few years now and wish to express my sincere sympathy to Connie and your family. - Posted by: Rita Roeland-Borthwick (acquaintance) on: Jun 09, 2016

  • I will always remember Marvin's genuine warmth and bright smile. Whenever I saw him he was always curious to learn what the students in my classroom were up to, full of stories and a supportive ear. It isn't hard to imagine the kind of teacher Marvin must have been. I was lucky to know him and to see this golden-hearted grandfather in action. He is loved dearly and will be missed. All my love and best wishes to Connie, Pat, Mark, Gabe Tara, Deborah and the entire family. - Posted by: Genevieve Norberg (Auntie to Marvin's Grandson) on: May 24, 2016

  • My condolences to Connie and Family. So sorry to hear of Marvin's death. I know you will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you. In the 50's, I was privileged to meet and get to know Marvin with his youthful enthusiasm, his positive outlook on life, ever-ready wit and humour and warm personality. Thinking back to our happy school days, we have since shared many good times together. As his teacher, I also remember the students' eagerness to tackle a particular situation which required of each of them many extra hours of very hard work to overcome an unfortunate educational challenge, not of their own making in that first year together. To our great mutual satisfaction, Marvin and his classroom made it! He could well say "Life has been good since!" Take solace in the fact that Marvin has led a full and productive life and has given much back to the community. - Posted by: Dagney (Kristiansen) Chornoboy (Ex High School Teacher and Principal, Rorketon, MB) on: May 23, 2016

  • What a truly lovely man. He was always a favourite among his students. We are all better for knowing him. My condolences to his loved ones. - Posted by: Erin Maor (Student) on: May 22, 2016

  • To Connie and family. It is with a heavy heart that I heard about Marvins passing. My deepest sympathy. May the support of friends and relatives give you the strength to move forward. It has been almost four years for me. While we will never forget, remember that it is one foot forward at a time. Time will never heal the pain, but it gets less and less with each passing day. God Bless you. - Posted by: Frank (Joey) Gorai (Old high school friend) on: May 22, 2016

  • Mr Krawec was my teacher at Crescent View school. He was one of those teachers you remember with respect and admiration. He was funny and fair but also had a temper that you were aware of very quickly and made all efforts not to see. He loved to joke around with students and fellow teachers and went out of his way to help you succeed. Many years after I was out of school and I would see him on the street he would always acknowledge me and it would warm my heart to know he remembered me. His passing is a huge loss to all that knew him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. - Posted by: Debbie steiss (Former Student) on: May 22, 2016

  • Farewell my dear Uncle Marvin, fly slowly towards the angels and remember that you were a inspiration and role model to all that had the pleasure to know you. You will always be in our hearts. May you watch over us for eternity. - Posted by: Gar Krawec (Nephew) on: May 21, 2016
