LAWRENCE WILLIAM STOCKTON September 30, 1946 - May 18, 2016 It is with utmost sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Stockton on May 18, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be lovingly missed by his wife, Heather, of 42 years, his children Susan (Cory), Ashlee (Kyle), Clarke (Gina); grandchildren, Davis, Abby, and Hailee; sister Patti (Dave) and brother Jim (Tammy), as well as many nieces and nephews. Lawrence was born in Kamsack, SK, grew up in Virden, MB, and lived in Winnipeg. He ran a successful Dental practice for 25 years and taught Dentistry at the University of Manitoba for 18 years. He retired in 2012 and enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, AZ, playing golf and tennis. Throughout his life, Lawrence was an avid sports competitor, successfully playing hockey, squash, curling, golf, hunting, dog training, and winning the Vanier Cup in football with the University of Manitoba in 1969 to 1970 as well as being inducted to the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame. Born a natural leader, he was also incredibly charitable with lending his time and experience teaching tennis, being a board member with various organizations, and helping with extra events at the dental college. The family would like to extend their thanks to the healthcare professionals, and Palliative Care nurses and doctor who's compassion and support allowed Lawrence to remain at home until his passing, surrounded by his family and friends. A Celebration of Lawrence's Life will be held at 2:00 on June 3rd at Breezy Bend Country Club In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to CancerCare Manitoba or to a charity of the sender's choice.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I am sad to learn of the passing of Lawrence. I remember him as a very kind and caring person. My sympathy to Heather, all of his family, friends and colleagues. I recall an incident that took place when we were in grade five. On occasion a group of classmates were allowed to attend the movies on Saturday afternoons. Every one paid their own way into the theatre. However things became exciting at the concession counter. Here the boys parted with their allowance to treat the girl of his choice to a box of popcorn. This day Lawrence chose me. We had been seated for a few minutes when Lawrence put is arm around my shoulders. I promptly informed him that he had to sit up straight and remove his arm because my mother and father would be upset at our behaviour. I did say it would be okay for us to hold hands. He gave me a disgusted glance as he removed his arm. Moments later he looked over at me and said -- "I want my popcorn back!!" Lawrence will be missed by everyone for his kindness and high standards. My deepest sympathy. Simply stated, we are all wealthy to have known him. - Posted by: Donna Jean Gerrier (classmate elementary and high school/friend) on: Jun 03, 2016

  • My deepest condolences to all the Stockton Family. Lawrence was a very active supporter of Clarke during his time with the Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band, serving on the executive as well as taking part in our many fundraisers. Quiet dignity and a strong character are what I remember the most. - Posted by: Karen Bowman (Friend (LSBSPB)) on: May 31, 2016

  • I had the immense chance and honour to be one of Dr. Stockton's students. He is one of the most talented, dedicated, fair, energetic, caring, intelligent, beautiful human beings I have ever met. Words can not express the gratitude for having the chance of learning from such a wonderful, gifted, generous, amazingly skilled, Mentor. He has been an example to us, every single day, of Excellence in our profession, but also of what it means to be a true Leader and Gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Dr.Stockton, and with your family. May they find strength during these difficult moments. Words can not express the sadness. The loss is deeper than an abyss. We will always miss you, Dr. Stockton. THANK YOU for everything! You will live forever in our minds, hearts and memories! - Posted by: SMARANDA DANESCU (Student) on: May 30, 2016

  • Dear Heather and family, on behalf of the Leisure World Tennis Club of Mesa Arizona, we offer our thoughts and prayers at the passing of our friend Lawrence. He was a friend to everyone, partner or opponent on and off the courts. We will miss his terrific smile, his words of encouragement and most of all his friendship. - Posted by: Howard Hering (Leisure World Tennis Club) on: May 28, 2016

  • As I think back to our undergraduate years Lawrence went about his business in a very precise and timely manner. No need for fanfare. A side of him I never experienced, his athletic prowess till I saw Lawrence play in a Intercollegiate Championship game as a tight end. He made a very timely reception to keep the drive going. The only time after graduating that we really got to visit was at our class reunions. Little did I know our last Class Reunion would be our last. I thank Lawrence for accepting my phone call a number of weeks ago . Lawrence's profound advice to me was that I should make sure to " catch the bus ". Something passed on to him when he retired over 5 years ago. Thank you Lawrence for your life examples you gave. You are missed dear classmate of 70. • Lawrence and I were classmates together at the Dental School, University of Manitoba. He was a well admired athlete by our entire class. In our 4th year he rode with me to the Faculty each day as we lived in the same complex. Our young first born daughters became friends and enjoyed many "play dates" together in their pre-school years. We instructed together at the Faculty. When Lawrence decided to go into full time at the Dental Faculty I was one of the first to support him. When he expected high standards from the students he would settle for nothing less. He was always admired and respected for this. Our class is scattered throughout Canada, however this didn't stop us from enjoying several class reunions and keeping in touch. He will be sadly missed. My condolences are extended the entire families. - Posted by: Dr. Mark Buettner (Friend and Colleague) on: May 28, 2016

  • Lawrence was a gifted athlete and a good friend. When playing golf or tennis with Lawrence he was always there for you with encouragement and helpful advice. I loved playing golf with Lawrence and would give most anything to have had just one more opportunity to play another round of golf with him or to go to OTG for "Wings Wednesday". However, I'm glad his suffering is over and he's teeing it up in a better place.. - Posted by: Rick Lowderman (Friend) on: May 28, 2016
