Date of Passing: May 21, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARTHUR RONALD (RON) CRAPPER March 11, 1933 - May 21, 2016 It is with great sadness that we must announce Ron's sudden passing. After a happy gathering with many of his family, Ron passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday May 21. Ron is predeceased by his parents Helen and Arthur and his first wife Lorraine. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Joan; brother Murray (Nancy); son Doug (Mary Nemeth); granddaughter Katherine; Joan's family Donna, Dave, Alex, Kristen and Laura Miko and Ron's many nieces, nephews and their families. Ron was born March 11, 1933 in Toronto Ontario. His love of nature established itself with his involvement in the Scouts and Rovers of Canada where he was made a Queen's scout and established many lifelong friendships. He attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute where his musical abilities flourished. A talented oboist with the gift of perfect pitch he was offered a scholarship by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. NTCI was where he met a young clarinet player named Lorraine Howison, who would become his wife in September of 1956. Their son Doug was born 10 years later. Ron's ear and love of harmony drew him into the world of barbershop. He sang with the Hometowners quartet and directed several choruses including the Scarborough Dukes of Harmony, Markham Chorus and the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen. Barbershop gave Ron both joy and friendships that would last for his entire life. After several years with Underwood Typewriters, Tab Products of Canada and Wilson's Office Specialty, Ron and Lorraine were transferred to Winnipeg in the early 70's. After starting a new life on the prairies the couple established Total Data Products which the family ran until Ron and Lorraine's retirement. Summers and retirement were spent surrounded by nature and friends at the family cottage on Granite Lake Ontario. Two years after Lorraine's passing in 2002 Ron met the second love of his life, Joan McCallum. Drawn together by their mutual love for music Ron and Joan were married in 2005 and spent 11 wonderful years of travel and happiness together. Joan's family were an unexpected and delightful addition to Ron's later years. A celebration of Ron's life will take place Friday June 17, 2016 at ANAVETS, Unit 283, 3584 Portage Avenue at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a Memorial fund has been established in Ron's name at the Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/sing-canada-harmony-scholarship-fund/

As a University friend of Doug's, we would periodically gather at Granite Lake for fun weekend. Ron was a welcoming host and fun person to hang out with. He also taught me that a begonia bulb could be saved year over year. Truly I was in awe of his crop of begonias. My husband and I have very fond memories of time spent at Granite Lake with Doug, Mary and Ron. - Posted by: Robin Parsons (Friend of Doug's) on: Jun 01, 2016

Ron was greatly admired by both of us. When he moved to Winnipeg in 1975 he became involved as Director of the Golden Chordsmen and he took our organization to new heights insinging quality and membership. We spent many good times at their Granite Lake cottage with other barbershop friends where we held the Barbershop Olympics and did a lot of singing. Ron was part of our senior curling team at Valour Road Club. He certainly contributed to my enthusiasm for Barbershop singing for many years. Our sincere condolences to the family in particular to Doug who was always involved in his younger years. - Posted by: Vern and Aggie Fast (Barbershop Harmony friends) on: May 28, 2016
