SOPHIE BARCHYN (nee SEMENCHUK) It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sophie Barchyn (nee Semenchuk) on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the age of 91. Left to cherish her memory are son Derek, daughter Marlene (Merv), grandsons Jonathon and Anthony, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom is the last one of her family having been predeceased by parents Pantelmon and Pearl, sisters, Marion, Anna, Katherine and Emilie; brothers Arthur, Jack and Henry. She was also predeceased by her first husband Wilfred Gluck. Mom was born in Narol, MB and moved to Winnipeg where she worked in a garment factory during the war. She was a very good seamstress and made many fashionable outfits for herself and others. She returned to Narol after her marriage to John in 1956, where they farmed and raised two children. She remained on the family farm until last summer when she took up residence at Red River Place in Selkirk. Mom and Dad loved both singing and dancing and frequented all the dance halls in their younger years. Mom was an active member at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where she sang in the choir. She was always available to lend a hand no matter if it was church related or helping out the family. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff on Riverbed at Red River Place. You made Mom's time there very comfortable. Thank you to everyone that visited her, she really enjoyed having company. Prayers will be said on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 5635 Henderson Hwy., on Monday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. with Father Gregory Scratch officiating. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Narol at 5635 Henderson Highway, Narol, MB R1C 0B6, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choice.  VICHNAYA PAMYAT  CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I built steps for Sophie a few years back and out of the blue Sophie called me to ask how I was doing years later. I was surprised and happy to hear from Sophie. To the family of Sophie my condolences. Sophie was full of energy and sharp minded. - Posted by: Laurie Sabiston (carpenter who did work for Sophie) on: Jun 12, 2016

  • On behalf of the Harry Homenick family I would like to send my condolences to Derek, Marlene and their families on the passing of Sophie. She is now with her beloved departed husband Johnny, my parents Harry and Annette, and many other relatives. I would like to share a quote with Sophie's family. "Sophie has not died, but merely gone away, to a better place, free of pain and suffering. We will see her again someday." Rest In Peace Sophie. You are loved and will be missed. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (On behalf of the Homenick family) on: May 28, 2016
