RYAN ARTHUR WIRTH (A.K.A. THE SODFATHER) February 19, 1956 - May 25, 2016 Unexpectedly on May 25, 2016 the world lost a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Ryan was preceded by his father Arthur Wirth, and son Michael Wirth. He leaves behind his wife of almost 40 years, Leslie (nee Massie), son and daughter-in-law Steven and Kirsten (nee Cathcart), daughter-in-law Michelle (nee Smith); grandchildren Ryan, Riley, Dexter, Logan, and Reese; mother Susan, sister Charlene and brother-in-law Harry Hubatka, brother Sheldon and sister-in-law Marion Wirth, mother-in-law Helen Douglas, sister-in-law Rosalee and brother-in-law Pat Pare, brother-in-law David Massie Douglas, sister-in-law Katherine and brother-in-law Mike Timko, sister-in-law Helene and brother-in-law Don Podolecki, a great number of nieces and nephews, a large extended family; and was a great friend to numerous individuals - you know who you are. Ryan was always actively involved in the community and his 39-year old company Perfect Landscaping (PL). Ryan has left his mark throughout the City of Winnipeg with various landscaping projects. He was a founder, charter member, and former president of the East St. Paul Lions Club; board of director for Entegra Credit Union; and longtime M.H.C.A. member. Ryan was a great friend and mentor to many, regarded highly by those he met in his personal life and in business. Ryan believed in hard work and instilled those values in his family and demonstrated his dedication in all that he took on. Ryan believed in giving back to the community by giving blood regularly and actively participating in the growth of the Lions charitable actions and Entegra Credit Union. Over the last several years Ryan and Leslie spent a good portion of their time in their winter home in Yuma, AZ. Ryan enjoyed golfing regularly, swimming, and riding not one but two of his Harley's. Ryan had become a collector of vehicles as well and loved his SSR, decorated in the traditional PL colours, as well as his "Bomber" limo. A memorial reception will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the Canad Inns Club Regent Hotel, 1415 Regent Ave. West, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. There will be no formal service so please come and go as you please. • I was so saddened to learn of Ryan's passing. I know that Ryan was well loved and respected. I still remember being in high school, 16 years old. I was having a "party" (my parents were at home). When Ryan pulled up in front of my house my Dad came flying down the basement to tell me Ryan's tires were on fire! LOL! Lots of great memories. Leslie, you have my deepest, sincerest sympathy. - Posted by: cathy kelly (searcy) (friend ) on: May 30, 2016

  • I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Leslie, Sheldon, Steven, Michelle and the rest of the Wirth Family. Ryan was not only my very good friend but was my Mentor in the Industry. I first met Ryan when I was 6 years old, when he was just starting Perfect Landscaping and working on a Sod job for my Father. He gave me a Perfect Landscaping ball cap, which I still have to this day. I would wear it every so often to meet with Ryan and we would always have a great laugh. Later when I was in my Teens, Ryan offered me a summer job on his landscaping crew. I remember telling my Dad I didn't want to be a landscaper, oh if I had only knew where fate would land me, I would have jumped at the opportunity. Fast forward to 1999, and I entered into the Landscaping industry. Immediately Ryan became not only a client but began to mentor me in the industry. I valued each conversation and meeting with him as there always seemed more to be learned from such a wise man. I truly respected how he ran his business with such a high degree of ethics and professionalism, all the while putting his family first at all times. I will never forget the lessons he taught me over the years. Ryan loved people who were hard workers, and naturally bonded with me and my crew. Ryan had an especially close relationship with Russell and Shawn that always loved when Ryan would visit them on sites. This was especially so when we were working on weekends and Ryan would show up in his beloved SSR, and often take people for a boot in his car. He was for ever cracking jokes and playing tricks on me and the guys. It always seemed to be a one up man ship of who could get who better. I always looked forward to our phone calls, as no matter the problem one of us were having the other could end the phone call with both of us laughing and feeling better. Some of the best times together were on the golf course, where of course the hijinks would start between myself and our friend James, and Ryan would be laughing hysterically and egging me on. I will never forget those times. Ryan was truly a man to be looked up to and respected. He loved life, and always knew how to have a good time. Ryan you will be missed, rest in peace my friend, you will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Keith Porter (Friend and Protege) on: May 30, 2016

  • My deepest sorrow goes out to Leslie , Stephen, daughter in laws and grandkids. Your family has been through alot the last 2 years . Ryan was a great man and friend, he taught me a lot. It's amazing how two competitors can become such good friends. Something I am sure neither of us expected. I didn't realize until the last few days that have passed, how close we had become. I loved our talks and how we could de-stress after a long day and cheer up each other up. I already miss the texting, phone calls and breakfast meetings. The best part of my holiday this year was visiting you and Leslie in Yuma with my family, thank God I made it this time ! Thank you for teaching me there is more to life then work and that's why we work hard to enjoy life. Rest in peace my friend and you truly are "the sod father" I will remember to always put the green side up. Thanks Buddy. - Posted by: Gord bragg B& B landscape (Friend) on: May 28, 2016
