HAZEL EDITH CAMPBELL (nee QUELCH) June 2, 1923 - May 28, 2016 After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's, Hazel passed away peacefully at East Gate Lodge in Beausejour, Manitoba, just five days short of her 93rd birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, James William and Minnie Quelch; husband William Alexander "Al"; brother Grahame; sister Joan; brothers-in-law Arthur, Neil and Ted; sisters-in-law Nancy, Annie, Maybelle and Maxine. She is survived by her son Neil (Karen) and daughter Lisa (Ken) Merke; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. Hazel was born and raised in England. As the Second World War began, she joined the Women's Land Army and worked very hard on the farms as the men were sent to war. It was during these times she met Al, a Canadian soldier, fell in love and was married December 1943. Al was sent home in 1945 but she was unable to join him till June 1946. With strength and courage, she left all her family and friends to make the journey to Canada with her infant son to start a new life. Her first priority was always taking care of her husband and children. Later came three generations of grandchildren which added much love and enjoyment to her life. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, gardening and cooking. Many of the family favorite dishes still continue today. After Al passed, she made a new home at East Gate Lodge where she met many new friends and they became her second family. She will be missed by many, but people who knew her will never be able to forget that awesome smile she never was without. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. MB.
