MARIAN (MARY) KAMPEN (nee KIEZ) November 23, 1928 May 29, 2016 With deep sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, at St. Boniface Hospital, with her daughter by her side. Mom was born on the family farm in Menzie, Manitoba, the fourth girl in a large Ukrainian family of nine children. She had a long career as an elementary school teacher, starting with one-room country schools, followed by many years in Winnipeg including the St. James Assiniboia School Division. She also went back to school at the University of Winnipeg to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985. Marian leaves to mourn her daughter Karen (Dr. Andrew Davidson), and three beloved grandchildren, Angela, Ryan, and Sarah. She also leaves behind three brothers, Tony Kiez (Emily) of Russell MB, Larry Kiez (Rose) and Ned Kiez (Leona) of Ottawa ON, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son David in 1985; husband Hjalmar in 2000; as well as three sisters, (Nell Hrytsak, Tena Remenda, and Margaret Juce) and two brothers, (Stan Kieze and Tom Kiez). Those who remember Mom from her younger days recall her as the glamour queen of the family, tall and strikingly attractive, dressing in Holt Renfrew fashions of the day. She had a great sense for art and style but was not at all materialistic. She had a very quiet dignity and like many shy people, once you got to know her you would realize how intellectual she was, one who never said a bad word about anybody. Mom had in some ways a very hard life. But she knew the recipe for a well lived life, which was to put family first. She married Dad in 1955 and had two children, David in 1961 and Karen in 1967. Of all the Kiez siblings she is the one who took on the responsibility of caring for their mother for over 15 years in her home, never asking for anything in return. Not once did she ever tell any of us "sorry, I'm too busy for you". After the loss of her son she somehow carried on. When her first grandchild Angela was born in 2005, people remarked that they saw a light in her that they had not seen for many years. Those three little children had magical healing powers. They constantly entertained her with the skits they would perform in the living room, the pictures they drew for her, or just being by her side every day. She was able to live with us at our home since 2007 with the help of Home Care until mobility issues led to her move to Pembina Place personal care home at the start of 2015. Our family is so very grateful to their staff for providing her with such loving care. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. (viewing at 11:00 a.m.) on Friday, June 10 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge St. It will be followed by private interment at Chapel Lawn, next to her son, as she had wished. "Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation" (Khalil Gibran). Rest in Peace, Mom. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

  • Karen: I did not know your mother, but I was touched by the picture of her life that appeared in the obituary, which I am sure you composed. She must have been an amazing person! I was also so impressed by the tradition of caring for others that you obviously inherited from her: caring for a parent, that is. So I extend my sympathy to you and your family, and hope that you may get in touch with me later, when you have time. All the best, Audrey - Posted by: Audrey YOung (Friend/Teacher) on: Jun 06, 2016

  • I FIRST MET MARION WHEN I WAS VISITING MY GRANDMOTHER MARINA BAUBIE. MY UNCLE MIKE WAS DRIVING OVER TO UNCLE TONY'S PLACE TO DISCUSS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FARM AND I CAME ALONG FOR THE RIDE...AS I SO OFTEN DID. MARION, HER MOM AND SISTER WERE IN THE KITCHEN WITH THE TABLE COVERED WITH ALL THE CANNING EQUIPMENT A PERSON WOULD NEED TO START A SMALL BUSINESS. I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 7 OR 8 YEARS OLD AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD MET THE FAMILY ALL TOGETHER. THEY INVITED ME IN AND I SAT AND WATCHED FOR A FEW MINUTES AS THEY PREPARED THE FRUIT....IT TURNS OUT IT WAS BOXES OF PEACHES. IN NO TIME AT ALL, WITH LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT, I WAS HELPING TO PEEL, SLICE AND PACK THE JARS. I ENDED UP SPENDING THE WHOLE MORNING WITH THEM AND WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN MY UNCLE SAID WE HAD TO GO. IN THE TRUCK I TALKED MY UNCLES EAR OFF ABOUT WHAT A FUN TIME I HAD ...AND I HAD BEEN, IN MY OPINION, A GREAT HELP. THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS STORY IS HOW THOSE THREE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY MARION HAD MADE ME FEEL SO WELCOME, SO ACCEPTED AND SO EAGER TO COME BACK FOR MORE VISITS. OVER THE YEAR THERE WERE MANY VISITS.BUT NONE SO MEMORABLE AS THAT ONE MAINLY BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT ALWAYS THERE TOGETHER WHEN WE CAME OVER. I LIVE ON VANCOUVER ISLAND NOW, AND HAVE NOT BEEN BACK TO THE PRAIRIES FOR YEARS, BUT MY THOUGHT OF THOSE MAGIC MOMENTS OF YOUTH AND FRIENDSHIP WITH FAMILY ARE STRONG. My deepest condolences to the family for their loss. - Posted by: CHRIS MOTYKA (HAZELWOOD) (COUSIN....my grandmother Marina Baubie and Tony Kiez were siblings) on: Jun 04, 2016
