GEORGE HENRY GELHORN Our loving dad, grandpa, and brother passed away peacefully, May 31, 2016 at the age of 74. He leaves to cherish his memory through stories and laughter, his daughter Diana (Larry) Weremiuk, grandchildren Brett and Katee; daughter Lisa Hunter, grandchildren Kiera, Alayna, Holly and Javan; his sister Barb and brother-in-law Terry Durham; his former wife Marge; life long friends, Walter Hrymak, Jim Funk, and grand fur babies, Nahla and Penny. He was born in Winnipeg on July 6, 1941 to Henry and Barbara Gelhorn. George loved to share with everyone the many memories and stories of time spent growing up with his parents, sister, granny, grandparents and numerous cousins. He played high school football for St. John's for three years. George enjoyed working for his family's business, Gelhorn Motors in the 1950s and 1960s, always excited to test drive all the new cars. In keeping with family tradition, George started his own drilling business in the early 1980s. When marriage to Marge, and then his two daughters came along, George got to spend time camping, cheering his girls on at their activities, teaching them about cars, and taking his family on fun summer road trips, always stopping to enjoy wildlife and quaint little towns along the way. He worked for Imperial Oil for 30 years in Winnipeg and Alberta, retiring in 1996. Always a hard worker, retirement for him meant starting a new job with a concrete company where he worked for 16 years. George loved camping, museums, volunteering at Fort Edmonton, all kinds of wildlife, and spending time with his family and their dogs. The longest with Jazzy, Lilly and the Crispies. He was a big supporter of his grandkids and happily attended their soccer games, hockey games, gymnastics competitions, musicals, award nights and concerts. George loved going to Kildonan Park especially with family or on his own, appreciating the beauty of nature. In keeping with the joy he felt being there, we will be holding a BBQ celebration of George's life at Kildonan Park, for family and friends on Thursday, June 16 at 6:00 p.m., shelter 3A. We would love for you to share a favourite story or memory of him. A very special thank you to the incredibly caring Riverview staff from the 3rd floor. Your commitment to value life in all its stages is clearly evident in the way you cared for George and his family. Donations to the Humane Society can be made in his memory. George was a generous, kind, thoughtful man, whose sense of humour was appreciated by everyone who knew him, and to which he passed on to his daughters and his grandchildren. We love you, always and forever, and will miss you everyday.

  • My husband worked at Imperial Oil with George for 30 years, also when we were all transferred to Edmonton we renewed our friendship and George became a part of our family. We spent time together bowling and camping. George was very compassionate and kept in touch with us after he retired to Winnipeg and he phoned often to talk to my husband Ken while Ken was ill. After Ken's passing George still continued to keep in touch and we talked about our families. He was a good friend and he will be missed by many. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Eileen Asselstine (friend) on: Jun 05, 2016
