Born: Feb 04, 1925
Date of Passing: Jun 01, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLUVERNE EDA MARY SPENCE (HICKS) February 4, 1925 - June 1, 2016 Luverne passed away, peacefully in her sleep, at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg on Hugo Street at the age of 91 years. Mom loved flowers and always had a small bouquet on our kitchen table. When we started school there were a few flowers to take to our teachers. She quoted a poem that said "to bring her flowers when she was alive and not when she was dead". She would be out "puttering" in her gardens when we got home. We could always find her as she whistled all the time. Dad and Mom were avid boaters and travelled far and wide with their boat trailered on behind. They belonged to Redboine Boating Club of Winnipeg and travelled many miles on Lake of the Woods - always with their beloved Collie dogs Laddie and Rusty. Mom met Dad at the Munitions plant in Toronto during the War. They married three weeks later on July 21, 1945 and celebrated over 70 years together. Mom worked for the Post Office in downtown Winnipeg for many years. She was also in the Army Reserve and trained in Winnipeg, Shilo and Wainwright, Alberta. She enjoyed this and we remember her cleaning her buttons before going to meetings. In later years Mom worked for home care and enjoyed all her ladies that she cared for. She loved to knit and we wore beautiful handmade sweaters, mitts, scarves and slippers and had nice quilts for beds. Luverne is survived by her husband of 70 years, Donald Spence; children Bonnie (Harvey) Sangster of Kenton, MB, Donna Spence of Calgary, and Ron (Linda) Spence of Kelowna; grandchildren Robert Marcyniuk, Erin (Henry) Bretonne, Keith Foss (Jeanette), Lori Foss, Cameron (Chelsea) Spence, and Sara (Landon) Hanington; great-grandchildren Jonah Marcyniuk, Sonya and Ivan Foss, Kayla Foss, and Clementine Hanington; many nieces and nephews, and her very special sister and friend Eunice Whitney of Kelowna, also her good friend of many years, Brenda Jordan of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her three brothers Cyril, John and Raymond, sisters Victoria and Winnifred, and grandson Hugh Sangster in infancy. The family would like to thank the Convalescent Home staff for their great care of Mom. We feel truly blessed that she was there. As per Mom's wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service.

Bonnie, Donna and Ron.....So sorry to hear about your Mom.....we had many fond memories growing up and living next door to you. The dog I remember was "Rover".....toured the neighbourhood looking for a snack. And yes, I always remember your Mom in the garden whistling.
