MOYRA BENEDIKTSON It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Moyra Joan Benediktson. She passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016, with family at her side, from lung cancer. She was 80. She was predeceased by parents, Sigga and Arnthor, her brother Johann, her daughter Susan and friend Ruth Scott. She is lovingly remembered by sisters, Sheila and Connie (Ralph); daughter Connie (Bert); sons, Bruce and Jeff; grandchildren, Michelle and Trevor, Tessa and Jesse, and David and Sean; many adoring nieces and nephews (and grand-nieces and nephews); and wonderful friends like Olan and Helen. Moyra grew up on a farm in Minerva and though she travelled and lived in many other places, Gimli was home. Doing her part at the Minerva Ladies' Aid was one of the many ways she gave back after her return: keeping the community knit together, near the site of her former school. She spent as much time as she could at the farm, especially with the strawberry fields group - picking weeds and having a wonderful time doing it. To her last days, the farm was her favourite place to be. She delighted in watching another generation take over, and got to return for one last visit. Winters were spent at the curling rink - very often in the winner's circle - and days weren't complete until the crossword was. Unfortunately, she grew up in a era before swimming lessons, because she loved Lake Winnipeg and spent as much time as possible on its shores - looking for lucky stones on the west side beaches and Willow Island wiener roasts in particular. She loved feeding her family, but when they grew up she enjoyed feeding the orioles just as much. We'd like to extend special thanks to Dr. Roma, the nursing staff at Gimli Hospital and the culinary team there as well - the food, especially the borscht and rhubarb, was a source of much happiness. Please join us for a cup of coffee to celebrate Moyra's life on Saturday, June 11, 2:00 p.m. at Minerva Hall (109N and Highway #9). In lieu of flowers, donations to Minerva Ladies' Aid or Husavik Cemetery would be warmly appreciated.
