VALERIE DOREEN MACKINNON We are both saddened and relieved to announce that Valerie Doreen MacKinnon (nee Poole) passed away on June 9, 2016, at the age of 81. Saddened because we will miss her laughter, warm hugs, and humour; but also relieved that her suffering is now over. Valerie was born in Thunder Bay, the youngest of a large and loving family. She is survived by her siblings, James Poole and Verna Boyd. Mom was gregarious, friendly, funny and sassy. Her natural warmth attracted people to her and she was always kind and hospitable in return. Mom moved to Winnipeg in 1998 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She made friends of all ages, but her circle of widowed girl friends, whom she called The Old Dolls, brought her much joy and laughter right up until the end of her life. Valerie developed a rare blood disorder that sapped her strength but not her spirit. She coped with her condition admirably for several years until she had a stroke in 2012, from which she never fully recovered. Valerie was a baptized member of Jehovah's Witnesses and she was an active student and teacher of the Bible for as long as her health allowed. Valerie's five children mourn her passing, Brian (Diane), Susan (Dale), James (Kari), John and Justin (Tureema). Our faith in a promised resurrection to a paradise earth gives us comfort in knowing that we will see Valerie again in all her former vigour. (Revelation 21:4) A memorial service for Valerie MacKinnon will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 937 Gateway Road, Winnipeg on Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.

  • Dear Susan, Brian, James, John, Justin and Families, Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your amazing mother. Your mom had such a wonderful magnetic personality. Everyone was wanting to be in her company. Her sense of humour, compassion and kindness towards others was always present. I was so very lucky to have the opportunity not only to work with your mom but to learn much from her. If ever there was a person who has left this world a better place than she found it, that would be your mother. • Although I didn't have the honor of meeting your Mom, I got so much enjoyment listening to the many stories Susan shared with me over time and it certainly gave me a vivid picture of what a feisty, classy lady she was. She has definitely left footprints in your heart. A mom's hug lasts long after she lets go. I am so very sorry for your loss Susan. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Hugs to you, Marni - Posted by: Marni Carlson (Friend of Susan's ) on: Jun 13, 2016
