Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE GERSHMAN George Gershman, aged 93, beloved husband of Gloria, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Victoria General Hospital, in Winnipeg, MB. Dad was born in Winnipeg on April 5, 1923, the youngest of six children, to parents who were born in Russia and came to Canada in 1917. He attended Aberdeen School, St. John's High School and United College, graduating with degrees in both Arts and Social Work. Dad served in the air force during the Second World War, and after completing his social work degree in 1948, he worked nine years as Shaarey Zedek Synagogue's first executive director. In 1957, Dad took us to Florida where he was the executive director of the Beth David Synagogue in Miami, before returning to Winnipeg in 1960. Dad spent the next 20 years as manager of the Glendale Golf and Country Club, followed by 15 years as the general manager of the Charterhouse Hotel, before "retiring" in 1995. Dad epitomized enthusiasm and community service and was well known in Winnipeg for his work in the hospitality and tourism industry. He served on numerous committees and boards, receiving many awards including the prestigious City of Winnipeg Community Service Award in 2007 and the Winnipeg Tourism Lifetime Achievement Award of Distinction in 2012 for his "six-decade career as the ultimate Winnipeg booster". Dad continued to connect with Winnipeggers as a motivational speaker to senior citizen groups and organizations advocating healthy living. Dad loved sports having played hockey, football, soccer, golf and was consistently one of the top bowlers in Manitoba. The Bombers were his love, having been a season ticket holder for over 50 years. Along with his love of Winnipeg, Dad showed that same devotion to his family. Dad taught us that the path to success was passion, drive and hard work. As a devoted husband, father and grandfather, he will be deeply missed by Gloria, his wife of 67 years; his sons, Darryl (Diane) and Stuart (Niki); his daughter Shelley (David); and his grandchildren, Rachel, Daniel, Kara, Michael, Emily, Max, Zakary and Ashley. He was predeceased by grandson Jesse in 2014; his parents, Samuel and Freda; his brothers, Norman and Joseph; and his sisters, Goldie, Ruth and Annette. The Gershman family are grateful for the care and compassion of the doctors and staff at the Victoria General Hospital, where Dad spent his final weeks. Funeral services were held at graveside, on June 15, at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.

I worked for Mr Gershman at the Charter House. I was fresh from the east coast and had no experience. He said if you work hard you will succeed and gave me a chance. When he came back from vacations he always had new ideas for the menu because of what he experienced on his travels. The man was always thinking about improving and making it BETTER. Wow could he talk. But never boring. I thought of him often after I left the Charter House. He was a very good man. my condolences to his family. - Posted by: kathy m (former employee) on: Jun 27, 2016

Mr. Gershman was an incredible man and I so enjoyed years of working with him at the Charter House Hotel. We had such incredible times together, great arguments but never anything serious. We had a connection that was so very special and I will always cherish our time together. So sorry for your loss Gloria and to your whole family. He was a loved man and I thank God that he was in my life for the 5 plus years he was, memories last forever!! - Posted by: Joyce Clapham (Friend of many years) on: Jun 26, 2016

I worked for George Gershman for some time. He took an interest in his employees and always had an open door when we needed him. He was a great General Manager who was extremely successful at what he did and he always promoted Winnipeg in a positive light. He will be remembered and missed. Although words are of little comfort at this time, my wife and I send our sincerest condolences to all the Gershman Family. - Posted by: Gilles Daigle () on: Jun 14, 2016
