MARCELLA MARINA GAMBOZ April 28, 1922 - June 13, 2016 It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Marcella on Monday, June 13, 2016, at the age of 94 years, with her family at her side and familiar Italian music playing. Predeceased by her beloved Valentino (February 12, 2005), Marcella will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son, John (Lorna); granddaughters, Julie (Marty) and Katie; sister-in-law Evelina (d. Arturo); niece Dina (Les); grandniece Katherine; as well as numerous nieces; nephews and their extended families in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Argentina. Marcella was the youngest born to a large and loving family in Castelvenere Istria (Croatia). She was a very attractive young woman with many suitors, but she chose her beloved Valentino and with their son John, enjoyed a modest and happy seven years on the farm in Gambozzi. Due to political uncertainty, they chose to leave everything behind in search of a better life in Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax in March 1957 and then by train to Swan River, Manitoba. Marcella quickly determined that working on a farm in Swan River (resembling Siberia in March) would not be better than what they had left behind, so the family was on a train to Winnipeg the next day. She had a happy and productive life in Winnipeg, sewing leather coats in a factory for 35 years (50 if you count the overtime)! Marcella enjoyed cooking multi-course meals for the numerous gatherings of family and friends over the years. She was very proud of managing to acquire her driver's license at the age of 60, to the total shock and awe of family and friends! Marcella was a wonderful dancer and with her beloved Valentino, was often seen joyfully, gracefully and effortlessly traversing a dance floor. After losing her husband in 2005, she enjoyed many happy years at Villa Cabrini, playing cards and bingo with her Italian friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg, with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano, presiding. A private entombment will follow in the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery. Our family offers a heartfelt thank-you to all the medical and nursing staff that cared for her during her last few months, especially the staff of Pembina Place Nursing Home and the 5th floor staff of Victoria General Hospital. Their kind and compassionate care are greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marcella's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0S6.
