She was predeceased in death by her parents, William and Hope Burch; husband Clifford Brooks; Baby Oakes; son-in-Law Maurice Oakes; mother and father-in-law Mae and Alfred Brooks; sister Shirley McKay; brothers-in-law, Jim Anstett, Alex McKay and Dave Phillipps; and sister-in-law Edythe Phillipps. Joyce is survived by her three children, Brenda Oakes, Bryan Brooks (Margaret), Brent Brooks (Louise); eight grandchildren Diane Froese (Bevan), Jo-Anne Godard (Damien), Sandi Oakes (Roger Kolberg), Jason Oakes (Shari McAllister), Colin Oakes (Lindsay Storie), Barbara Davies (Bryn); five great-grandchildren Cameo Shale Brooks, Ben and Anna Froese, Jayd and Tyler Brooks. Wellwood, MB was home for her early years. Later her family moved to Bagot, MB to farm. Joyce went to school in McGregor, Portage la Prairie and Business College in Winnipeg. Joyce and Clifford were married on July 10, 1943 in the front room of her parents' farmhouse in Bagot. They lived with her parents at the farm when Clifford enlisted in the army to fight in the Second World War. Upon his return Clifford and Joyce and baby Brenda moved to Gladstone MB where they settled and raised their three children, Brenda, Bryan and Brent. Joyce worked at various businesses in Gladstone as a bookkeeper; Beaver Lumber, Gladstone Creamery, Bank of Montreal and Gladstone Garage. Later, Cliff and Joyce owned and operated "Brooks Grocery Store". After several years, they sold the store and Joyce found herself quite busy managing the books for M & B Welding while working for Seven Regions Health Centre. Along with her working career and raising her children she was actively involved with the Gladstone community, United Church UCW, Legion Auxiliary, Bridge Club and Wooly Wizards. Her hands kept busy, knitting afghans, crocheting, and other stitch work which earned her several awards. Joyce and Cliff moved to Winnipeg in 2002 to be closer to family. Mom kept actively involved at "The Portsmouth" with plant sales, modeling clothes, working in the store and socializing. Sadly, Cliff passed away March 24, 2003 just before their 60th anniversary. Joyce mourned his loss. In 2012, Joyce moved to the Golden Door Geriatric Centre where she lived until she passed away on June 16, 2016. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gladstone United Church with Lynne Sanderson officiating. Our deepest sympathy to all the Brookses. I can fondly recall all the family Christmas celebrations we shared together and especially the ones in the apartment above the store. As a child I can still remember thinking what an interesting place to live. I can still remember the extended holiday time visits with Brent in Gladstone and the kind hospitality "Auntie Joyce" had provided. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be there on the 29th as we are away until September. Again, our deepest condolences and may God grant you his comfort during this most difficult time.
