DOREEN ELEANOR FRIESEN (nee HASKETT) 1920 - 2016 Doreen Friesen passed away peacefully at West Park Manor in Winnipeg on May 24, 2016, at 95 years of age. Doreen was born on September 25, 1920 in Virden, Manitoba to Julia and Thomas Haskett. She lived on a farm in the Springvale District with her three brothers: Earl, Joe and Len, and five sisters: Emma Cheaters, Eva Hoppe, Ella Rolston, Lena Clarke, and Violet Williamson all of whom predeceased Doreen. Upon finishing high school, Doreen moved to Toronto where she worked in a bank. She then returned to Virden during the Second World War and packed parachutes for the Canadian Air Force. She remained in Virden until she met and married Nicholas Friesen in 1950 and moved to Headingley. She and Nicholas farmed and operated a construction business while raising their three children. Upon retirement, Nick and Doreen headed to Alamo, Texas for winter months filled with golf, dancing and happy hours with many great friends and family. Doreen was an avid golfer and curler. She formed many wonderful friendships while participating in her favourite activities. She continued to golf into her late 80s, walking the 18 holes sometimes twice a week. A devoted and very loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she always put others before herself. Doreen has now reunited with the love of her life, Nick, who predeceased her in 2012. Mom will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children Lloyd (Linda), Brent (Denise), Linda Joy, and grandchildren Tara Friesen (Jay Popowniak), Laura Friesen (Jordan Fierce), Ashley Mummery (Mark), Sarah Johnston (Jackson) and Nicholas Friesen (Shalane). The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to West Park Manor for providing our mom with such excellent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice. A celebration of Doreen's life will be held June 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear cousins Lloyd, Brent and Linda, I'm sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter how old your parent is when they pass away, they're still your parent and it's sad. My heart goes out to you and your families. t have such fond memories of Auntie Doreen from the many times we would visit your home on Roblin Blvd. Your mom was always so gracious and welcoming, even when we dropped in unexpectedly. She was a class act, your mom. I didn't know that she was so adventurous as a young single woman, going off to Toronto to work in a bank! Uncle Nick was lucky to have her and so were we other Friesens. I'm sorry I missed her service; I would've loved to have seen you all. I'm so grateful that I did see Auntie Doreen a couple of times in the past couple of years. She was a sweetheart and I'm sure you'll miss her very much. • I regret to say that we didn't make it to Auntie Doreen's celebration...it was something we were looking forward to. My dad expressed his desire to attend as he so cared for your mom and dad and you the family...but with his eyesight & hearing almost gone (he loses track of time) Mark & Karin out of town and Dave & I without a vehicle at present we accidentally missed the gathering. It seems our life has been so affected by the winding up in the sale of our businesses that we are very neglectful of these more important things. We hope this conveys our regret in missing the celebration of our lovely Aunt Doreen's life but we certainly enjoyed all the great times and laughs we enjoyed with your folks...eg Mexico and Texas. Maybe we can get together this summer for my dad? Vini will be out July maybe we can do something then as Uncle Ed (dad) has an excellent memory and he continues to regale me with wonderful stories of his family and I know the cousins would enjoy hearing them too. love to your family - Posted by: Pam & Dave Weiss (Niece) on: Jun 30, 2016
