Predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary (McFarlane). Much loved father of sons, Ian, Malcolm, Peter and Ross, and grandfather of six. Survived by sisters, Sheila (Lloyd Alder) and Sally (Don Hanna), of Winnipeg. Bert had a remarkable life as a scholar and a father. He was born in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba, served in the Navy and received a doctorate from Cambridge. Most of his career was at Queen's University, Kingston, where he was the Cappon Professor of English Literature. He shared a love of the outdoors with his family, hiking and canoeing, and spending time at the family cottage. Bert devoted many years to the care of his wife Mary, who suffered a long decline from Alzheimer's disease and died at home in January, 2014. Bert was an extraordinary father, husband and scholar, and will be profoundly missed and always remembered as a giant of a man. There will be no service by his request. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation can do so at the Wilderness Conservancy. Condolences are welcomed at yourlifemoments.ca
