EVELYN BROWN June 7, 1921 - June 20, 2016 On Monday, June 20, 2016, Evelyn passed away at Misericordia Hospital. Left to cherish Evelyn's memory are her daughter Judi (Bob); daughter-in-law Heather; daughter Pat (Jim); grandchildren, Tracey (Erich), Kerri (Michael), John (Leah), Graeme (Sarah), Aaron (Justine), Alex (Roger), Ian (Bryanne), Andrew (Vickie), as well as seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Jack (J.K.) Brown; son John Robert Brown and all seven siblings. Evelyn Jean Steele was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, the fifth of eight children. She met Jack during the Second World War, when he was stationed there before going overseas. After the war, when Jack returned, they married and moved to Winnipeg to start their life together. She was very athletic, and after her days of track and tennis were over, Evelyn continued to enjoy badminton, curling and particularly swimming, for many years to come. She was an avid baseball fan, and shared her love for the Blue Jays with her grandsons. Evelyn was very skilled in all the domestic arts. She was an excellent cook and baker, and knit and sewed clothing for her children and grandchildren. Evelyn was extremely warm and personable. She drew people to her. She had friends of all ages, and was always open to meeting new people and learning about their lives. Evelyn took time to listen to her children and grandchildren, and had a special relationship with each. Family was everything for Jack and Evelyn. The tradition of family gathering for Sunday dinner was very important, and has continued on in the next generation. The family cottage at West Hawk Lake provided an opportunity for family gatherings for many happy years, including Thanksgiving weekends, and a special Christmas celebration. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Road. We would like to extend deep and sincere thanks to the nursing and support staff on Cornish 2, Misericordia Hospital for the kind and professional care afforded Evelyn and her whole family, and for the dignity with which she was treated. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Pat, Judi and Family, I was very sorry to hear of your loss. I never had the pleasure to meet your Mom, but can only imagine how lovely and vivacious she would be knowing you both. Thinking of you. - Posted by: Patti Wiebe (Friend) on: Jun 23, 2016

  • I have fond memories of Aunt Evelyn. We didn't see each other often due to distance; still -her warmth, wit and lively nature made for indelible recollections. Dad always spoke with enormous respect for his sister Evelyn. May the family find strength and comfort in the rich memories of her life. - Posted by: Donna White Steele (niece) on: Jun 22, 2016

  • We knew both Jack & Ev for many years and relished our visits and interactions with them. Despite Ev's health challenges these last few years she remained an optimistic and engaging person. The Johnson family will miss her. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Dave, Merril, Morgan and Hayley Johnson, Mike & Kelsey Calvert (Family friends) on: Jun 22, 2016
