HILDEGARD (HILDA) KAKOSKE Passed away peacefully on June 18, 2016, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 92 years. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is missed by all. Remaining to cherish her memory are her son Garry and wife JoAnn, son Dennis and wife Joan, daughter Darlene and husband Chris Pritchet, granddaughters Lisa, April, Alexandra and fiancé Andrew, Tracey and husband Calvin, Trina and spouse Michelle, Melanie and husband Jared, grandsons Glen and wife Jennifer, and Scott, step-grandsons Luc and Olivier Labrie, great-grandchildren Tristen, Evan, Rhys, Ben, Nathaniel, Samuel, Grace, and Hunter, also Hilda's sister-in-law Mercedes in Sturgeon Falls, ON, brother Harry and wife Nellie in Winnipeg, stepbrother Sonny and wife June in Vernon, BC, and brother-in-law Egnace in Victoria, BC. Hilda was predeceased by her husband Richard in 2011, mother Lydia, her father Julius, brother Julius, sister Esther, stepbrother Edward, and stepsister Lydia. Hilda was born January 19, 1924, in Novograd, Ukraine, to family of German descent. Hilda immigrated to Canada via Southampton on August 10, 1928 aboard the Empress of Scotland. Hilda crossed the Atlantic as a four year old with her parents Lydia and Julius, older brother Julius, younger sister Esther, stepbrother Edward and stepsister Lydia. The family settled in what is now Bird's Hill Provincial Park in Manitoba where they farmed. The family later moved to the Interlake district and eventually farmed near Hodgson, MB. Life was not easy and the experiences of these early years had a lasting effect on Hilda. Hilda met her future groom, Richard, at a dance in Winnipeg in 1944, fell in love immediately and married in 1945. Together they had three children Garry, Dennis, and Darlene. Hilda always worked hard at providing for them. She was the family matriarch, very industrious, loved fine furniture, music and art, traits that have been passed onto her children. Together with her husband Richard, Hilda was always ready to tackle any challenge and they worked together building new, renovating and upgrading their many homes...and together became adept at building wealth and security for their family. Hilda and Richard traveled and enjoyed the freedom of these adventures. Hilda will be remembered as a spirited soul. The family wishes to thank everyone involved for the kindness and care that was given by the wonderful nurses and staff at Riverview Health Centre and Pastor Schnarr at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. A Celebration of Life event will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, 2:00 p.m., at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg. Donations can be made to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 1541 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2M 3V8, or to the Lighthouse Mission, 669 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1E3.
