WILFRED REMI TAILLIEU
Born: Aug 19, 1948
Date of Passing: Jun 27, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILFRED REMI TAILLIEU August 19,1948 - June 27, 2016 It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Wilfred Remi Taillieu on June 27, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. His time with us was too short but he will be forever remembered by his family; loving wife and soul mate Mavis; stepsons, Graeme Hall (Andrea) and Tyler Hall (Chantel); his two special grandsons, Liam and Matix who gave him great pleasure especially in his last days; sister Marilyn Christianson (Lorne); brother Roger Taillieu (Georgia); nephew Bob Reidy (Day) and sons, Carson, Mitchell and Everett; niece Alison Reidy, niece Heidi Taillieu (Dan Caron) and daughter Julia; and Marcel's wife, Irene Seredych. He also leaves to mourn many cousins and many, many friends. He was predeceased by his son Garth, his mother Alida and father Marcel. The loss of Garth dealt such a heavy blow it profoundly changed his life. Wilf was born and raised in Headingley, where he attended Phoenix School, then on to Beaumont School and graduating from John Taylor High. After sampling the rigors of construction life imposed on him purposely by his father Marcel, he opted to go to the University of North Dakota, ultimately earning a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. And thus began his life running the family construction business, Taillieu Construction Ltd. and serving as President from 1978 until his passing. He loved the heavy construction industry - there isn't an area of the city where Wilf's company did not install the sewer and water lines for housing developments. He led by example with a strong work ethic and a deep respect for his employees. He was rewarded by dedicated people who weren't just employees but friends. Because of them Taillieu Construction is well recognized within the industry as dependable, honest and trustworthy. Wilf served as the President of the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association from 1989-1990. He and Mavis attended many conventions and made many friend within the industry. The construction industry is a close knit family and although competitive with each other in some areas, life long friendships were forged. Perhaps most rewarding was his role as Mayor of Headingley, a position he held from 1999 until his passing. Wilf along with a group of like-minded individuals was the catalyst that ultimately saw Headingley secede from the city of Winnipeg in 1992. He served as a councillor when the new council was initially formed and became Mayor in 2000. He was so proud of all that Headingley accomplished and indeed without his dedication and his guidance Headingley would not be the success it is today. He was a principled leader and consensus builder. He always put Headingley first. Wilf and Mavis visited many places around the globe, often with "the Amigos", before settling down to winters in Palm Springs where they had many friends, and many parties. Everyone knew Wilf's beverage of choice was a healthy black russian. It was in Palm Springs that Wilf took up cycling and enjoyed the exercise and friendship of the cycling group. He loved to golf but only with friends who allowed him to bend the rules. Wilf met his untimely and tragic diagnosis of terminal cancer with courage and never faltered in his positive attitude. The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who cared for Wilf with such kindness and compassion. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Cathlolic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg. A private interment will be held at St. Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, the Headingley Foundation (via Endow, MB), or a charity of choice. My sister, Barbara Ann Harris, and I had the pleasure of working with Wilf on the development of the residential subdivision, "Marston Meadows" in Headingley. Wilf was a very fair and supportive neighbour; and business associate (and mayor of Headingley). He had a great love for his family first, his community second and his business third. Our family sends our prayers to the Taillieu family during this very difficult time. - Peter Harris - Posted by: Peter Harris (Friend ) on: Jul 06, 2016

Wilf was always the life of the party at family gatherings on Boxing Day and other summer backyard fun days. One of my favourite Wilf memories was when he was going for a long football pass and he landed in the flower garden. Nothing a Black Russian couldn't cure. It as hard to see how deflated Wilf became after his son, Garth's tragic passing. He is with him again. Great men taken too soon. You will be missed Wilf. Deepest sympathy to Mavis, Marilyn and Roger. - Posted by: Nadine Young Claeys (cousin) on: Jul 05, 2016

It's hard to imagine that Wilf has passed on. I dealt with Wilf for many years, a true gentleman, a good customer and all I can remember is the good times golfing at the lake with Wilf and Mavis, the great times with all the guys snowmobiling at the cottage and I do remember Wilf's favourite drink being Black Russians. You will be missed by many. My sympathy to Mavis and family. - Posted by: Gil St Hilaire (Friend) on: Jul 03, 2016

We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Wilf and yourself over the years as we have worked for you. Whenever our guys were at your place Wilf always made a point of greeting them with a wave or 'hello.' One time he even hopped into the van and visited with the guys while they ate their lunch. Though we've never gotten to know you on a personal level, we have a tremendous amount of respect for your husband/father and your family. He was a true servant to his community in the fullest sense of the word, and will be greatly missed. We feel so honoured to have known him even the little we have. Our prayers are with your family during this time. God bless. - Posted by: Sharenda Wiebe () on: Jun 30, 2016

I went to grade school with Wilf many years ago and remember when he assisted me while being chocked to death by a schoolyard bully. For this I am forever in his debt and wish him only the best in his new journey beyond life.
