MARK MALKIN Mark Malkin, 64, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on June 28, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters Blaire and Alexis Malkin by whom he was so beloved, his siblings Tannis Saper and Ian Malkin, his son-in-law Rob Bastress, and brother-in-law Zivan Saper. He will always be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Arlo and Della Anne Bastress who brought him so much joy. He will also be deeply missed by his nephew Avi Saper (Rachelle), as well as by many cousins and dear friends. Mark, like his father Alex Malkin, had a sweet, gentle nature. He was truly comfortable in his own skin and accepted everyone without judgment. He was a bit of a rebel and enjoyed mischief, wearing his hair long from an early age, despite parental disapproval, and introducing friends to Dylan, Zen Buddhism, and Kahlil Gibran. He had abiding passions for baseball, politics, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Bob Dylan, curling, and Camp Massad -- where he was a camper, counselor, and lifeguard. These interests were the foundation of many lifelong friendships - in particular his Sweepers and curling teammates, and fellow Massadniks. For many years, he ran the Laughing Giraffe toy store and brought his soft touch to helping parents select the perfect toy for each child. His quiet compassion and the pleasure he took in the people and things that meant the most to him are qualities his children and grandchildren will always remember and hope to emulate. Like his father before him, Mark died of heart failure. Though he died far too young -- his heart could no longer sustain him --the love he carried in his heart will sustain his friends and family. Mark's funeral was held at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on June 30. Honorary pallbearers: Lloyd Wolfe, Joel Lazer, and Darren Earn. Pallbearers: Avi Saper, David Folk, Ian Staniloff, Ron Yurman, Gary Gumprich, and Saul Greenberg. Should you wish to honour Mark's memory, contributions would be welcome to the Mark Malkin Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, Camp Massad, or to a charity of your choice.

I had a memory today and had to look up and see where Mark was nowadays. Just sad to read this but very happy to share incredible memories. As a child I lived down the street from the Laughing Giraffe. It was my fondest memory as a child. I would often go visit Mark and want to see every new toy he had put on the shelf that week. It was honestly my favourite activity for years as a young child. He had a big heart and would always let me run around looking at everything in his store, well knowing I had no money to buy anything. He also shared this passion for every toy he sold. Almost every birthday and every holiday I got pick a toy out of his store and he would always have a big smile on his face as he could see the excitement in mine. Mark was a true childhood hero and a creator of memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life. - Posted by: Brettt (Customer) on: Aug 03, 2022

We have very fond memories of shopping at The Laughing Giraffe. Many Christmas and Birthday gifts were purchased with Mark's kind and enthusiastic assistance. Mark was always willing to spend time helping our children pick just the perfect gift or toy. I remember how sad we all felt when the store closed; we are once again feeling a sense of loss at his passing. May warm memories sustain his family. - Posted by: The Militano Family (former patrons of The Laughing Giraffe) on: Jul 18, 2016
