JAN MENSING Jan passed away on Friday, June 24, 2016. Jan was a loving husband, father and Opa. Jan loved Willy, his wife, for more than 30 years and he will continue to love her from his next destination. He enjoyed his life and used every minute of the 88 years he lived. Jan grew up in Holland during the hardest of times. He served in the Dutch army, worked in coal mines and had many other jobs to provide for his family. In 1960, Jan immigrated to Canada with his family and worked hard from the minute he landed, he never stopped being productive and industrious. In Canada, he also provided for his family by many different means. Whatever he could do for work he did, from gardening to sales to foundry work to being a handyman. In the end his best job, the job that gave him many years of pleasure and from which he retired, was at the University of Manitoba. He was a super star member of the Dutch Canadian Society and will be best remembered for his dedication to the Harmonicats and the Choir, especially during Folklorama. He will also be known for his smooth and lovely dancing..... Jan could make anyone dance well when he was leading! Jan and Willy were a good team. With Jan as the steady man that he was, they established a home together where everyone was welcome. Jan also took great pride in the cottage that he and Willy built and were able to enjoy for many seasons in Belair. They travelled to China, France, Germany, England, the USA (including Alaska), throughout Canada and of course many times to his homeland of Holland! Jan will take stories from across the world with him on his next journey. Jan will be ever loved and missed by many. He is survived by son Ben, daughters Marianne, Anna, Diane, Janet and Kathy and their extended families. Also left to mourn is his brother Tinus (Stini) in Holland. He will also be remembered by Willy's family, Mary-Anne, Harold, Caroline, Reg and their extended families. Thank you goes out to everyone along the way in the recent years who helped Jan and his family along this road. We are grateful for the care and compassion provided by the staff at the Golden West Centennial Lodge, especially Kristin Z. and the second floor staff. Our journey was made much better because of the work that they did. Willy would also like to thank Caroline, Diane, Mary-Anne and Ryan for their dedication and support to Jan and her on this last homestretch. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, July 12, at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 2:30 p.m. Memorial donations can be made in Jan's name to the Immigrant Women's Association of Manitoba (IWAM), 108-424 Logan Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0R4, made online at www.Canadahelps.org (search IWAM) or dropped off at the Memorial Service.
