Date of Passing: Jul 08, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. SIDNEY STANDIL Dr. Sidney Standil passed away on July 8, 2016 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Adele (Goldberg) Standil, daughter Lynda (Andrew Cassel), sons, Alan, Arthur (Shari), and Fred (Carol), as well as grandchildren David, Daniel (Mako), and Erin Cassel, Ryan and Macey Standil, and great-grandchildren Nova and Terra Cassel. He was predeceased by his parents David and Anne Standil, his sister Reva Litman, and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Stanley Goldberg, Eileen and Barry Tessler, and Elaine Goldberg. He is survived by his brothers-in-law, Dr. Percy Goldberg and Dr. Jerry Litman, as well as 10 nieces and nephews. Sidney was born in Winnipeg and raised in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He earned a full scholarship to Queen's University, which was presented to only one Grade 12 student in Saskatchewan. After five years at Queen's, he had completed his undergraduate and Master's degrees in Science with Honours in physics. In 1949, he was hired as a lecturer at the University of Manitoba, where he earned his Ph.D. He taught in the Department of Physics, and focused his research on Nuclear and Cosmic Ray Physics. In 1969, he was elected as the first non-administrative faculty member to the University's Board of Governors, where he served for eight years. He was Dean of Graduate Studies from 1973 until 1979, when he returned to the Department of Physics. Sidney was bright, reliable, modest and wise. He was a devoted husband, son, brother, father and friend. His opinion was sought and respected by many, on a wide variety of matters. As one of his graduate students wrote, "I studied physics under him but I learned so much more than merely physics. He helped me and calmed me when I was in trouble and guided me through to graduation." Having faced recent medical challenges with unending courage and grace, Sidney gathered his entire family around him, had wonderful visits with everyone, and passed peacefully just as he had lived his life; a gentleman to the very end. Any donations in Sidney's memory may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital (Kidney Health Unit) or to The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

I was a math and physics major at the University of Manitoba. I thought that Prof. Standil was the best teacher in that department. - Posted by: Larry Zamick () on: Feb 12, 2017
