LARS ANDERS WASS August 31, 1928 - June 19, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather Lars, at the age of 87. Born August 31, 1928 in Norway House Manitoba, he was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth and Torsten Wass, his sister Clara Mazur, brother Carl, Margaret Wass and his son-in-law Drew. He is survived and will be forever remembered by his children; Barbara Duff, Bonnie (Brian) Parkes, Melanie (Mark) Tooley, David Wass (Cheryl Cusack) and his grandchildren; Chris, Heather, Melissa, AJ and Meghan. Among other family members who will miss Lars are; his niece Carol Wass, his brother-in-law Albert Martin, his cousin Russell Hart and his sister's family in Ontario. Lars was raised in Island Lake, Manitoba, working in his father's store before moving to Winnipeg as a young man. He joined the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1953 where he worked as a fire fighter for 37 years achieving the rank of Captain. Lars or "Rocky" as he was known by his peers was well respected. He retired in 1990 and thereafter, remained a proud Retired Active Member of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Lars was also a skilled part time fur-grader at the Company of Dominion Sudak and later had time in his retirement for hobbies such as gardening, sketching, painting and crafting items for his family. He embraced aspects of his First Nations heritage and took every opportunity to converse with his sister in the Cree language with humor and recollection. Of particular note, Lars was a passionate and lifelong outdoorsman, who was happiest when moose and duck hunting or angling for trophy fish in remote lakes; always ready with an enthusiastic story about his exploits. He will be missed, and remembered as a handsome, independent and charismatic man. A private family service has been held. If friends so desire, a donation in his memory may be made to the Manitoba FireFighters Burn Fund, 83 Garry St., Ste. 303, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4J9. • My condolences to the Wass family. I have not seen you in as many years. I heard from my uncle..also retired fire fighter..of Lars passing. Always remembered going to your home as a kid and your dad being so kind. Never forgot the man..which speaks bounds of his impact on others. Wishing you all well. - Posted by: Barb Muzik (Adams) (Friend) on: Aug 08, 2016
