Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIRENE OLGA MCCARTNEY (nee SHEWCHUK) On July 11, 2016 Irene passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 79 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bert in 2012 and her son Larry in 2015. Irene will be sadly missed by her daughter Janice (Roger) Reich; grandsons, Jesse and Preston; daughter-in-law Christine; granddaughters. Lauren and Jenna; sister Rita (Ron) Stock; brother Bud (Carol) Shewchuk; good friends Ede and Al Bews and Julie and Henry Telenko; along with numerous extended family members, friends and neighbors. Irene was born in Winnipeg on August 8, 1936 and married Bert on June 22, 1957. Many of their early summers were spent with Larry and Janice at their cottage at the Big Whiteshell and trips with the Bew's family. Irene worked for Statistics Canada for 18 years and after her retirement she travelled many places with Janice, Larry and friend Debbie Briese. Irene took great pride in her grandchildren and loved spending all the time she could with them. She spoiled them all. She enjoyed attending their activities such as the boy's hockey games and the girl's swimming and clogging. Irene was a sweet and feisty woman. She had a great personality and was a very funny, caring and generous person. Our family would like to thank Dr. Caners for his years of care, the excellent staff at the Jocelyn house for their compassion and care. Irene made special memories and friends while in their care. Jocelyn house is truly amazing and run by Angels and also a special thanks to family and friends. In keeping with Irene's wishes cremation has taken place and no service will be held. In lieu of flowers and if friends so desire, donations may be made in Irene's memory to the Jocelyn House Inc., 177 Egerton Road, Winnipeg MB, R2M 9Z9. www.jocelynhouse.ca "Goodbye Mom and Grandma. Janice, Roger and boys so sorry for your loss. Your mom was very lucky to have you guys caring for her all these years and especially the last months when she needed her loved one's the most you were by her side until the end. She was so happy that her grandsons visited her often and was very proud of them. May the memories of her bring you comfort and peace. - Posted by: Brenda (Friend) on: Jul 28, 2016

I remember the day when her youngest grandchild (my Jenna) was born. She was there within 30 mins to see her precious baby....Lauren called her Grandma but we asked her if she could be BaBa...she said NO WAY, I'm not a BaBa that was my Mom. As months go by and Jenna begins to bable and talk, Irene was changing her diaper and Jenna looks up at her and smiles and says as clear as day....BABA. Well she from that day on became our BaBa. Jenna and her had a very special relationship, because they were two peas in a pod. HaHa, good and bad traits! We had wonderful times with Mom/Irene/BaBa/Grandma. The McCartney family is still grieving for the loss of Larry (her son, my husband) but we know they are all together probably playing cards or board game, which we did often. You will be truly missed and were truly loved. Rest now and know we all will be together one day. Christine, Lauren & Jenna xoxo - Posted by: Christine McCartney (Daughter-in-law) on: Jul 19, 2016

Well Irene, I guess I'll never be able to beat you at Scrabble again but I know you'll save me a seat up there and have it all set up and ready to go. I will miss you so much. When Janice and I travelled, the locals asked Janice if I was her Mama and we laughed at that. Then when Janice couldn't travel, Irene said I'll go with ya. So our first trip to the Dominican, locals asked me if Irene was my Mama. Irene and I had a couple of laughs all the time we travelled. One time both her and I wanted to get pictures with these red, white and black ducks. So I took her pic no problem. Then she gets behind the camera, and I bend down to be close to the ducks and look up and Irene is gone. She kept stepping back to get a better picture and fell off the stairs. She didn't get hurt lucky for us. But when I looked up, I was where the heck did she go. Then I hear a little voice. I fell come help me. I think we laughed the whole rest of the day about that incident. When the locals asked if Irene was my Mama, they didn't know that she was like a Mom to me. Gave me good advice when I needed it or even if I didn't. Big hug to her up there and to all her family. Love Debbie - Posted by: DEBBIE BRIESE (friend) on: Jul 17, 2016

Irene certainly was a sweet and spunky woman with a happy-go-lucky attitude and a million dollar smile! We remember the good times when the McCartney's lived across from 872 Beach Ave. and we visited each Christmas when Larry and Janice were little. After Bert and Irene moved down the street we continued our visits on both Beach Avenue and Big Whiteshell Lake. We have many treasured memories of both friends and family. Rest in peace dear heart… We will raise our glasses on August 8th, celebrating your 80th birthday! - Posted by: Ken and Linda Boughton ( Longtime family friends) on: Jul 16, 2016
