GEORGE HENRY STEGGLES 1925 - 2016 George died peacefully in his sleep on June 26, 2016 in Adelaide, Australia, aged 91. George Henry Steggles was born in England, but lived on three continents, where he shared his passion for Art Education, by inspiring teachers to help students explore their inner creativity. At the University of Manitoba and at University of Victoria, he taught with a contagious enthusiasm for freedom of expression in colour and texture, shape and form. He was a master teacher who firmly believed that every child is an artist. His passion in the classroom was equalled only by his passion in front of a canvas. In retirement, he was able to explore his own exceptional talent as a painter, capturing the rugged beauty of the Canadian wilderness and later, the extraordinary colours of Australia. He leaves a fine body of work on the three continents. He also leaves family and friends saddened that this tour-de-force has left them, but so glad that they knew and loved him. Mourning him in Winnipeg are his son Ian (Marlo) and grandson Aydin, and in Vancouver, his son Christopher. George will also be fondly remembered by their mother, Zyna. In Adelaide, he will be greatly missed by his beloved partner, Jane, and her caring son and daughter, Ian and Heather, and their families. George was such a lucky man. He lived the life he chose. His achievements were many. He had a long and eventful life, meeting wonderful people along the way. He made a difference. It mattered that he was here.

  • George made an indelible mark on my career as an educator. I was his student in 1974 at the U of M. We were part of a pilot project training in inner city schools. George raised the bar and we were challenged by him to meet and exceed. He personified what it meant to be a teacher and how to create creative and challenging spaces where children can thrive. I now use the primary tempra paint boxes we made for our classrooms with my grandchildren along with the many lessons that George schooled us to teach. Today, George popped up in my thoughts. I googled him and saw his obituary. I agree. It mattered that he was here. - Posted by: Lori Tighe (Student) on: Aug 02, 2021

  • George was my student advisor during my fourth year at the Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba. It was with George's encouragement that I excelled in Art, earning a 4.0 average in Independent Study, earning a place on the Dean's Honor List. George was also my teacher in subsequent Pre - Masters courses in Art Education, in Fabric Arts and Ceramics and Scupture. I am the daughter of the late Mr Norman Erickson, 1912 - 1975, HBC 1934 - 1975, who eventually was the top designer in Canada, personally designing the " Bay " logo, among other accomplishments. In 2003, I wrote his biography, which was accepted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, upon their discovery of my father's bust of King George V! for their Royal Visit to Winnipeg in 1937. Subsequently, I had the great honor of being the Queen Mom's "pen pal" up until two weeks before his passing; I am still in contact with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, William and Kate. Although I had not been in contact with George for decades, he came to mind for some reason or other, perhaps the sentimental emotions often eveolving over the holidays, and was very saddened to hear of his passing. I meant to reach him and tell him of my news, especially of my biography; George being English, I am certain he would be quite fascinated ! I am pleased to learn George died peacefully in his sleep, and as I know he believed in God, know he is continuing his art in the sky ! I am sorry for your loss ..... God Bless.
