Date of Passing: Jul 14, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRODERICK JAMES MCRAE Roderick James McRae, P.Eng. passed away at his home in Kelowna on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the age of 81. He was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on October 29, 1934 to John Lawrance and Margaret Westwater (Turnbull) McRae and grew up in East Kildonan. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Myrna; and his sons, Kirby (Joy Viberg) and Curtis (Jodie); and grandchildren Alexandra and Cameron. Rod worked for the City of Winnipeg for 37 years before taking early retirement, after which he worked for the City of Kelowna and consulted privately. Rod loved to build things, including flying model airplanes, electronics, and especially working on his home and cottage and helping his sons with their home projects. His lifelong interest was building and flying model aircraft, which he embraced passionately following his retirement. His other interest was Scottish music and culture and particularly the poems and songs of Robert Burns, and he was a long serving member of many Manitoba and British Columbia Scottish heritage, country dance and culture groups. A memorial service was held in Kelowna on Friday, July 22. A longer obituary will precede a service in Winnipeg to be held in September. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation in Rod's memory to Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Street, Winnipeg R2K 2V4, or to a charity of their choice.

Rod was the Commissioner of Works & Operations for the City during most of the time I chaired the W & O Standing Committee of Council. Rod never failed to provide his best professional advice on the issues of the day, and he did so quietly and without fanfare. Rod's professionalism and his tact during some difficult times and some difficult issues were always appreciated. Sincere condolences to Myrna and the family in your time of loss. - Posted by: Jae Eadie (former colleague) on: Jul 27, 2016

Rod helped me understand the intricacies of negotiating labour contracts, I being a union guy and he Management. After numerous discussions it was clear we were on the same page and had similar objectives. Rod was a giant in his field, so sorry he's gone. I will miss him. - Posted by: Don Gannon (Friend, colleague) on: Jul 23, 2016
