• I grew up a few doors down from Carl. I still have etched in my memory (from when I was only about five years old), a calm evening where my brother and I sat and talked with Carl on his front step, with Carla sitting next to him and smiling at us. I have even much earlier recollections of Carl waving out at us from the cab of a steam locomotive as we watched it travel out of the city on the tracks at the end of our street, and the concerned look on Carl's face the winter day he came to my rescue (as a little child in my snowsuit) after his small dog knocked me over and was licking my face. Carl and my father were good friends and together they kept themselves busy in their retirement years. Carl was the "good neighbour" that is very hard to find nowadays. He was a regular at the corner "Harry's Barber Shop" for the straight razor shaves and chat with the locals. Once in retirement, Carl even managed to make "special arrangements" with his past co-workers so that my young son could experience a diesel locomotive being operated by an expert engineer. When Carl and Estelle moved to Calgary to be with family, they always greeted us with a warm welcome on the occasions when we would stop by with our children to visit. We are going to miss Carl, but will recall him with fond memories.
