GEORGE JOSEPH MORRISSETTE Poet, storyteller, old-tyme fiddler. On July 21, 2016, George Morrissette passed away peacefully at the age of 78, at Riverview Health Centre, leaving behind his common-law wife Anne Dunlop and his children David, Vincent and Melody (Jon). Born in St. Boniface, George grew up the only child of Alfred and Aurore in a little house by the Seine River, where he returned to spend most of his life. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of Manitoba and a Master of Fine Arts from Herbert H. Lehman College in New York. He spent time as a small town schoolteacher, a salesman at Kennedy Art Galleries (NYC), a literary translator, playwright, youth worker and taxi driver. He enjoyed his time working with children through the Artists in the Schools program, his volunteer work at children's hospital and the production of his play for children, the Story of Day and Night. His poetry publications include Prairie Howl, Up Against the Open Sky, Finding Mom at Eaton's and Michif Cantos and his writing was included in the recent anthology, Manitowapow and many other publications. He loved new adventures and mischief and was happiest playing music for an audience and spinning tales. He met and befriended many people during his travels and camping trips throughout Canada and collaborated with various artists throughout his life. He enjoyed bicycling, gardening and hosting french fry cookouts. Flowers will be welcome or donations may be made to Siloam Mission or a charity of one's choice. Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of George's life at the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street on Saturday, August 6 at 2:00 p.m. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J.
