LORNA IDA CURTIS-HOWELL 1934 - 2016 After slipping away from us over the past several weeks, on the morning of Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the age of 82 years, Mom passed gently while in the arms of her daughter Carmen. Lorna leaves behind her daughter Miriam (Ean); grandchildren Erin (Colin), and Ashleigh (Sean); great grandchildren Malachy and Darby; son David (Laurie); grandchildren Brittany and Jordan (Erin); and daughter Carmen, who tirelessly cared for Mom the past months keeping her at home in comfort, and tending to all her needs. In 1953 Mom married our father Les Curtis, and for 13 years all was good living in Kenton, Manitoba. Lorna was educated in Voice at Brandon University Conservatory of Music, and was active in the community teaching singing lessons, and through her involvement in the church choirs. In March, 1966 Dad passed away and Mom was widowed at the age of 31, with three kids under the age of 12. Like many mothers of this era, she was a homemaker, not a career woman. Her music training was not enough to raise her family, and in order to further her education, she moved us from Kenton to Winnipeg. Mom was accepted into the Special Education program at Red River Community College. Upon completion of the two-year diploma course, she began what became a 25-year career at The Society for Manitobans with Disabilities in the nursery school program. She began her career teaching, and ended in a supervisory position. Along the way, Mom met widower Stan Howell. They shared a love of music, and for many years were each other's significant other. Eventually, shocking us all, they were married and spent many happy years together in Woodhaven. Lorna and Stan loved to entertain their combined families and many happy times were spent on Armour Crescent. Stan passed away several years ago, and Mom was widowed a second time. Things were not always easy for Mom after Dad passed. Going to school full time led to some lean years, but Mom always managed and we as kids never wanted for anything. Thanks to Marycer and Edna. Mom loved you both. A special thank you to Dr. Tse for the help, support, guidance and reassurance offered to Carmen over the past few difficult weeks. In compliance with Mom's wishes, a private family gathering has taken place. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial donation to the United Way, unitedwaywinnipeg.ca. In the face of adversity you managed very well, and did a great job raising the three of us. Thanks for always being there Mom. We love you now and forever." Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My deepest sympathies go out to the family I had searched and phoned and just never connected latterly and just discovered the obit after much trial and error due to some memory loss on my part. Lorna played a huge role in the beginning of my new career as nursery school teacher in Cerebral Palsy program in Summer of 1969 until 1972 and then again from 1984 until her retirement she was a dear friend as well as learned colleague. She is often in my mind as I retain fond memories and lots of fun times together she is sorely missed God Bless - Posted by: Anne McBride (Co worker at SMD formerly SCCA) on: Mar 24, 2019

  • Dear Carmen, My thoughts are with you and yours. You are never far from my memories. Love Allyson, Allysonjanethomas@gmail.com - Posted by: Allyson Thomas (Friend of Carmen) on: Oct 22, 2016

  • Our sympathies to Miriam, David and Carmen on the loss of a lovely Mother. I remember when you all lived in Kenton and Auntie Lorna was our Junior Choir Leader. A lovely lady with a beautiful smile and voice and a very nice Aunt. Unfortunately I have lost touch over the years with all of you but hope that everyone is doing well and you will always have such great memories of your Mom.
