Date of Passing: Aug 02, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRIESO MARTINUS BONING Frieso Boning passed away suddenly, with his wife Susan by his side, at home on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Born in Winnipeg in 1958, Frieso graduated from Kelvin High School in 1976 and studied Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba. Frieso met Susan in 1980 and they married in 1985. In the following years they welcomed Willem, Rosalind and Claire into the world. Frieso was an artist who worked across multiple mediums. His silkscreen prints, paintings, sculptures, installations and digital works are diverse in style and subject but all express his cultural prescience, sense of humor and love of craft. His exhibitions include Ladies and Gentlemen (Arthur Street Gallery, 1981), One Thousand Kimonos (Plug-In Gallery, 1981), Greatest Hits (St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre, 1996), The Winnipeg Trash Museum (Ace Art, 2007) and The Mobile Show (Actual Gallery, 2015). Frieso loved Winnipeg winters, when he would go on long nighttime skates down the Assiniboine. He also enjoyed summers at the beach and camping with family, and was an avid auction attendee and flea market visitor year round. In 2013, he was banned from Kijiji. Since the early 1980s, Frieso helped run Omniscreen, the family printing business started by his father. He retired in 2014 and put renewed energy into making art, using Instagram as a platform to share his work and support other artists. He will be remembered by his family, friends and employees in Winnipeg and also by a diverse community of online admirers. Frieso was predeceased by his father Jan and is survived by his mother Sigrid; brothers Chris (Mark) and David (Larissa); nephew Merritt and niece Esmé; wife Susan, and children Willem, Rosalind (Ketsada) and Claire. A celebration of Frieso's life will be held at the Park Theatre, 698 Osborne Street, on Thursday, August 11 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. I am saddened to hear of Frieso's passing. We were homeroom classmates at River Heights Jr. High School. Although we didn't get to know each other that well in regards to hanging around, I will certainly never forget our class time together, typically before lessons started, or prior to the lot of us moving along as a group to another class. I remember him as a very reserved person who always seemed to wear an open, friendly smile, with just a hint of playfulness behind it. During one of our class breaks, Frieso showed me a small cartoon booklet he had quietly been creating during our downtime.Very impressive; I was envious. I don't remember the content so well, but I'll never forget Frieso's non-pretentious way in showing it to me. From that moment on I held him in the highest esteem in terms of what a true artist is. No ego display ...no competitiveness..no sense of superiority...just humble communication. Frieso stands as the definition of a genuine artist in my mind. I have always admired him greatly and always will. He left an indelible Artist's mark on me. Sincere condolences to all of those who were in his life. - Posted by: A. I just accidentally found out. I am so sorry to hear the news. Frieso was a great person with a creative gift, a heart of gold and a wicked sense of humour. The world will definitely feel the loss. My deepest sympathies to Susan, Willem, Rosalind and Claire....and of course to the rest of the family. My prayers are with you. - Posted by: Joanne Marks (Old Friend) on: Sep 06, 2016

Frieso? I’m taken aback to have to state so clearly what I feel for Frieso – This is what I think of: fun, charm, wit, Winnipeg, kindness, intelligence, generosity… and fun. @oseirf6 caught my attention with his soapstone cell phone. His phones, brilliant! I was eager to see what he would be up to next, and often wondered, though not for long, what he would think of a recent post. It’s amazing that an insta- friendship of pictures and a few words, elicits these feelings, more than fleeting, of warmth, love, sadness – and fun. I had hoped to meet him IRL (in Winnepeg!) one day and really, in fact, in a small way, I think I have. Safe travels Frieso, and Love to all your family. - Posted by: Dana Jones (Insta-friend @cratetwelve) on: Aug 10, 2016

I was truly blessed at having known Frieso, over the years our loves have intersected in various ways. Through Willem and Kevin's friendship, as a caregiver to his children, as a friend to his brother and his wife and children, as a neighbour, both in my childhood home and again in my own home. I would occassionally see him and talk and it would always be comfortable. I was grateful to be able to see him one last time at Roz's social and will hold that memory with me. The Boning family are made up of beautiful people and I offer them my condolences and wish them healing at this time of sorrow. - Posted by: Maggie Cox (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2016
