DOROTHY JOAN ANDREWS It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Joan Andrews early on Monday, June 13, 2016. She is survived by her loving husband Kennedy Andrews, daughter Tannis Andrews-Causey (Chris), son John Andrews (Patti), and grandchildren, Hannah and David. Dorothy was born July 8, 1929 in Storthoaks, SK. She spent her early years on the farm with her parents Joseph and Nellie Oliver and brother David, then went to live with her aunt Rose McIntosh in Bowsman, MB. As a young adult she moved to Prince Albert, SK where she started working for Eaton's in the grocery department. She transferred to Edmonton, AB and started a new role on switchboard. During this time Dorothy made many friends whom she cherished and remained close to throughout her life. Dorothy eventually moved to Winnipeg with Eaton's and reconnected with her brother David whom she had not seen since she was a child. She left Eaton's and went to work for Great-West Life, once again manning the switchboard. There she met the love of her life Ken and embarked on her next great adventure, marrying in 1962 and actively supporting his participation in the Kiwanis Club of South Winnipeg, making more long-time friends with the members and their wives. Dorothy had many accomplishments. She was excellent at any craft that involved a needle, whether by hand or with her machine. She was most proud of her needlepoint renderings of famous paintings by Renoir and others, painstakingly spending hundreds of hours creating her own masterpieces. She was a Brown Owl with the local Brownie troop and an equipment convener at Riverview Community Club. Dorothy was especially good at finding the time to lend a hand for a charity. From collecting tabs from cans for wheelchairs to organizing a craft and baked goods fundraiser with girls from MTS on Corydon for whom she worked for after the kids were grown. For many years, her living room became a giant sorting field for Halloween candy collected to be sent around the province for less privileged children. Dorothy was a strong supporter of her kid's and grandchildren's activities. She attended as many games and events she could right up to this past winter. Dorothy and Ken were married for 54 years. They spent 24 retirement years travelling to Great Britain, Alaska, the Western US and as much of Canada as they could, spending considerable time in the Maritime provinces. A service to remember Dorothy will be held at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Avenue on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
