DAVID MICHAEL LAUDER 1948 - 2016 David passed away August 15, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. David will be sadly missed by his sisters Marilyn (Jack Mitchell) and Diane (Mark Soltys), brothers Cameron and Jack Lauder; nephews and nieces Dan, Keith, Brad, Graham, Rebecca and Alicia. David grew up in the west end of Winnipeg as the oldest in a family of five. He became quite involved in the local music scene and spent his early years at the Paddock with his friends and his motorcycle. David was a natural at science and got his degree at the University of Winnipeg. Shortly after, he went to work at MTS and made it a life-long career. David loved the outdoors and would have coffee every Saturday morning at the Wilderness Supply store where he made many friends. He joined the Cycle Touring Club and became an avid cyclist. He loved camping, kayaking and canoeing. David's greatest passion was photography. He got his first camera as a teenager and built a darkroom in the basement of his parents' house. In retirement he developed that passion into a full-time occupation. His photos expressed the serenity, depth and beauty of the world as seen through his eyes. He had a keen eye for detail and captured beauty in the most ordinary of landscapes. He loved to experiment with his photos and the result was the most unique vision that many have been privileged to see and hang in their homes. Over the years David joined clubs where he made many friends. He recently joined a wood carving club which he loved and found very relaxing. David will be greatly missed by his dog Shadow who was aptly named because he followed David's every move. David was a great dog lover and couldn't leave a dog rescue without taking one home. David loved to get together with family. He was a quiet man but those lucky enough to get to know him knew how intelligent, kind and generous he was. To paraphrase something he told his sister in a difficult time, "It's easy to want to be mad at God right now but, instead, we should turn to Him for comfort." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's name to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • On behalf of all of us at Photo Central, I wish to offer our sincerest condolences. We can all attest to David's love of photography, to mention nothing of his skill as well. It was always a better day at work when David came in, and we will miss him dearly. His quiet kindness, generosity and humility will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. - Posted by: Andrew Toews (Owner, Photo Central) on: Aug 23, 2016

  • David came to the Wilderness Supply Co as a customer but it wasn't long before he was a FRIEND. We came to call him DL and he always beamed when the entire staff would chide out in unison as he entered the store for his weekly visit. Frank & I were saddened to hear that DL had passed. There will be many groups of people missing his wry sense of humor and perpetual smile. I like to think he is somewhere now riding his bike or out paddling on a great calm lake w his camera at the ready for that next great shot....... - Posted by: Frank & Jan Sjoberg (Former owners of The Wilderness Supply Co) on: Aug 22, 2016

  • I knew David through business networking, and am surprised and saddened by his passing. I found him to be a quiet, intelligent, and supportive person. His photographic art of Assiniboine Park is truly impressive. - Posted by: Paula Carlson (Business acquaintance) on: Aug 20, 2016
