MIKE LEUNG February 28, 1927 - August 22, 2016 It is with deep sadness that the family of Mike Leung announces his sudden passing at his favourite place, the Wellman Lake family cabin. Mike was born February 28, 1927 to Choy and Winnifred Leung in Stenen, SK. Eventually, the family settled in Swan River in 1933. Mike graduated from Grade 12 in 1945 and began his teaching career that fall as a Permit teacher. He married Aileen Lorna McIntosh in 1951 and together they raised five children. He enjoyed helping others, playing cards and chess, fishing, reading, travelling, hiking and curling. His greatest enjoyment was spending summers at his cabin where he gardened and puttered all day. His pride and joy were his eight grandchildren. Over his 39 year teaching career, he upgraded his teaching status through Normal School, correspondence courses and summer school, earning his BA and BEd. He retired as principal of the Swan River Collegiate. Mike was very active in his profession and community: president/secretary of the Teachers' Local, executive member of MTS, TRAF board member, president of the curling club, 50 plus years member of the Royal Canadian Legion (president and zone commander, hall committee board member, captain of the 519 Air Cadet Squadron [26 years]). He was awarded life membership in the Legion in 2007. Mike was honoured with the Queen's Silver Medal, Canadian Forces medal with rosettes, Legion Jubilee Medal, and with his wife Aileen, the Swan River Kinsmen Citizens of the Year. Mike was predeceased by his parents, siblings, Anne, Ruth, Laura, Josephine and Peter. Left to mourn his passing is Aileen, his wife of 65 years, his children [and grandchildren] Morley (Trish) of Buchanan, SK [Erica and Ian (Mallory)], Cheryl (Ron) Tompkins of Brandon [Jeffrey and Angela], Heather (Alex) Buchko [Kristyn and Kaitlan], Kevin (Kimberly), Michael (Kathy) [Michelle and Alan], and brother Charlie (Pat) all of Winnipeg, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Mike was my grade 11 and 12 physics teacher at Swan River Collegiate, He was an inspiring teacher and a kind and compassionate person. Though I didn't know him well outside the classroom I have carried fond memories of him ever since meeting him in the fall of 1961. I would run into him the odd time in Winnipeg and it was always a delight to see him. - Posted by: Norman Mayer (Student) on: Sep 06, 2020

  • I was quite surprised to receive Mike's obituary, but pleased to read of all of his accomplishments; indeed a man of all seasons! So many accomplishments, but considering his temperament, not a surprise. I recall his genuine personality, and cheerfulness each day, when I taught Commercial l, ll & lll as a Permit Teacher. I would occasionally bump into him while shopping, as well at one of the Swan Valley Gatherings in Winnipeg. He left a true legacy of which his children, grandchildren & loved ones surely must be proud. - Posted by: Wilda Davy, formerly Birch River, & Winnipeg since 1978: (Colleague 1967-68 Swan River Highschool) on: Sep 26, 2016

  • It was a shock to see Mr. Leung's obituary when I was looking for another obit. I remember Mr. Leung as a great physics teacher. I hadn't realized that he had become principal of the collegiate which I am sure was a position he would handle with tact and discipline. The end of an era. - Posted by: Peggy Barker (Student at Swan River Collegiate 1959 -1963) on: Sep 18, 2016

  • Uncle Mike was always a kind and considerate person and had a real gentle soul. He always seemed to be happy and smiling (a trait that I think was shared by all his Leung siblings). His youngest brother Charlie (my Dad) always looked up to his big brother Mike and I know he was very proud of all that he accomplished considering their very humble beginnings. Family was always very important to Uncle Mike and I was fortunate to be part of his. - Posted by: Brent Leung (Nephew) on: Aug 30, 2016

  • "Low and behold" One of the best teachers I ever had! Also remember him refereeing our football games and being too honest for our liking. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Jim Craig (Student 1959 - 1963) on: Aug 27, 2016
