JAKI SKYE JACQUELINE ARCHIBALD Jaki Skye was a drummer, healer, artist and longtime health and wellness coordinator for North End Women's Center in Winnipeg. Born Jacqueline Lesley Archibald in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jaki and family emigrated to Canada in 1957. While maintaining a deep love of her ancestral roots, Jaki moved into a series of creative and healing arts, painting for self-healing and spiritual exploration, dancing spontaneously on innumerable occasions and learning vegetarian cooking skills before they became popular. She was a member of the Painted Ladies Theatre Company at The Women's Building in Winnipeg before moving to Vancouver, and later Toronto. A gifted artist, she was a graduate of the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver. She became very skilled in her self-taught arts, and worked for many years at the Winona School Day Care as one of the first vegetarian cooks in Toronto daycare system. While in Toronto, she studied tai chi under seifu Paul McCaughey, both before and after he opened his Rising Sun School of Tai Chi on Bathurst Street in 1984. She studied Chinese acupuncture, massage and herbology and western herbalism. She completed her studies, moving into full time practice in her home. She also became interested in plant essences for healing, and spent time in Bancroft wildcrafting a series of essences from the local fauna. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, she chose to treat as much with natural as allopathic methods, and felt she did well, when her all clear was given five years later. She returned to Winnipeg in 2005 to be closer to her aging parents. There, she joined the North End Womens' Center as drum coordinator, and later Health and Wellness Coordinator. Her heart centered on the spiritual journey and the women in the north end community. She organized what has become a wonderful annual teaching weekend at Manitou Api, a very sacred site where Jaki's ashes will be interred, where she loved it so and loved to share the teachings, do ceremony, pick medicines and heal. Her diagnosis of stomach cancer was received on August 1, Jaki passed into spirit on Wednesday, August 23, 2016, drummed out by her friends. Remembered with love and affection, by friends new and old. Predeceased by her father, Leslie, she is survived by her mother Isabel Archibald, Winnipeg, and her brothers, Alister and wife Bonnie Archibald of Winnipeg, and Peter Archibald of Vancouver. "And fare thee weel, my only love And fare thee weel, a while! And I will come again, my love, Tho' it were ten thousand mile."

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • We were both very young and idealistic. Jackie loved art and life. I am so sorry her life ended too soon. Such a very kind and old soul. I loved you. - Posted by: Karen (Friend) on: Mar 19, 2025

  • I’m so deeply sorry for our loss. Jaki and I were great friends for many years Jaki and I worked at Sprouts Childcare for many years we had wonderful moments together we laughed a lot. She taught me a lot of life lessons. Thank you and grateful for her teachings. On many occasions she would call my home line and she would so happily say “I’m coming to Toronto let’s meet at Ferro’s for lunch” Many things have happened in my life and thought of Jaki many, many times. I tried searching and had no luck until today September 27, 2024. I am very sad to hear this news. I miss you Jaki. I’ll always keep our love and friendship close to me forever. May you rest in Eternal peace my dear friend. - Posted by: Ivett Orellana (Friend ) on: Sep 28, 2024

  • It has been five years now, and in remembering Jaki, my partner of eleven years, I remember her best as a laughing, creative person. She easily made friends wherever she went, and her genuine care for them was healing and encouraging. She took several creative turns, moving from Winnipeg to Vancouver to Toronto and back to Winnipeg again. She had a love of life she transmitted to all who knew her. Thank you for being part of my family and my life. - Posted by: Ani Arnott (spouse) on: Jun 01, 2021

  • Thank you for the teachings. You were a role model for me! You showed me how to love myself and love the work. Today we released you at Bannock Point. What a wonderful day. - Posted by: Jess (Drum sister) on: Aug 16, 2020

  • So sorry to hear of your loss, which I only just discovered. I knew Jaki years ago and she offered a sincere and deep friendship. She is missed, I'm sure. Again, my condolences. - Posted by: Jan Creelman (Friend) on: Jul 04, 2017

  • Jaki, has been a very special and treasured friend for more than a decade. We were neighbour's, friends, she was my healer for a short time, shared a passion for food and cooking, but most of all she was my friend, no matter what time and distance was between us we could always reconnect easily and share our thoughts and laughter. The last time I saw Jaki was in 2014, when she came to visit myself and husband for a week in Toronto. I almost daily think of Jaki and times we have spent together. I will miss her very much. - Posted by: Michelle Fobert (friend) on: Oct 12, 2016
