BORIS HRYBINSKY
Born: Aug 27, 1953
Date of Passing: Aug 28, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBORIS HRYBINSKY It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing on August 28, 2016, of Boris Hrybinsky at age 63. Boris was born in Toronto on August 27, 1953. His parents had come to Toronto from Europe following the Second World War. He grew up in the Ukrainian Canadian community in Toronto and was a member of local groups such as PLAST. After finishing high school in 1971, Boris spent several years working and teaching through Frontier College. This took him to different parts of Canada, including a hydroelectric dam project in Longspruce, Manitoba, and a small community in the Arctic called Baker Lake. While at these placements Boris organized and taught English and other subjects to workers and residents of these communities. In 1987, Boris graduated with honours from the Carleton University Faculty of Journalism. His journalism career included working at the Elliot Lake Standard, the Welland Tribune, the Sudbury Star and the Winnipeg Free Press, where he spent 13 years. His senior positions in Winnipeg included assistant editor, innovations, features editor, deputy city editor and entertainment editor. The entertainment editor position was his favourite because Boris was interested in film and music. One of his hobbies was playing the piano which he learned at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto as a teenager. Boris also made frequent appearances in the column of his close friend Doug Speirs at the Winnipeg Free Press. He also received awards from the Canadian Ethnic Journalists Writers Club and from the Government of Canada in 1996 for excellence in journalism. Boris was predeceased by his parents, Boris and Svitlana Hrybinsky. Left to cherish his memory are his son Adrian, wife Angela, brother Alex (Debbie), nephews Daniel, Matthew and William, his mother and father-in law, Lesia and Anatoliy Grechkovsky, as well as their son Ihor (Melody), and his aunts and cousins. He will be deeply missed by all. Panachyda / Prayers will be officiated by Father Alexander Harkavyj on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., Winnipeg MB. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at a later date in Toronto.

I am so sorry to hear of Boris' sudden passing. We worked together at the Sudbury Star for years. I was a reporter and Boris was my city editor, and later managing editor. He was, and remains, among the best editors I ever worked with. He was so supportive, and a warm, generous spirit. Thanks to Boris, I assembled a decent portfolio of clips, and moved on to the Waterloo Region Record. Without Boris in my life, I am not sure where I would be today. My very best thoughts are with his family. The world is a little bit colder today. - Posted by: Terry Pender (Worked for Boris at the Sudbury Star) on: Sep 14, 2016

Boris: Gee, how I loved him! My heart is breaking over his death. Deepest condolences to his family, and to all of us who knew, respected and loved him. Dateline: NYC.... When I lived in the 100-year old Kagawong farmhouse 25 years ago, on Manitoulin Island, with my then significant other, in March 1992, New YOrk City born and bred me... stood at the snow-laden winter window wondering why I had given up living in New York City. I sent 4 silly columns titled Window Seat to Boris in Sudbury, telling how a New Yorker could be successful in the city, but afraid to walk out the door when the snow piles were over my head. He phoned me: "Bonnie, we read your columns, and after we picked ourselves off the floor laughing, can you give us twelve more columns?" I was so thrilled: "Boris I am sure I can make twelve more mistakes! You bet!" And we began a friendship. That was 25 years and 900 columns ago, and I owe so much of my delightful writing life to Boris. When my first book Manitoulin Adventures: I Was Mistaken for a Rich, Red Ripe Tomato was published in 2001, there was a Reception in Kagawong--and to my delight--here stood Boris and his beautiful wife! "I knew you could do it," he said, as I hugged each of them. Boris remains my delightful, respected editor, who became a friend. Respectfully, Bonnie Kogos Window Seat The Sudbury Star: Thank you, Boris - Posted by: Bonnie Kogos (Boris was my First Editor at The Sudbury Star) on: Sep 07, 2016

Boris and I were close friends in high school. We were both passionate about music and in many ways it was his influence during those early years that started my search for a satisfying, musical tradition. That quest took me to the east coast - my home for more than 40 years. During the late '70s Boris visited once and I was happy to see our friendship remained. Over the years I often thought of Boris, and we remained in touch through email. I always assumed that one day we would meet again. His unexpected passing leaves us all with a great loss. - Posted by: Paul Cranford (friend) on: Sep 06, 2016

I knew Borys and his family well when I was in my teens, and he and his wife-to-be attended my wedding in Toronto. I unfortunately lost touch with him afterwards, but remember him well. Tsarstvo yomu nebesne..... - Posted by: John (Ivan) Jaworsky (Friend) on: Sep 05, 2016

I was blessed to have Boris as a journalism colleague during a critical point in the industry's evolution. Boris was the epitome of what good journalism is really all about: intellectual curiosity, a keen sense of social justice and a passion for truth telling. A true loss. - Posted by: Bill Whitelaw (For work colleague) on: Sep 05, 2016

Dear Adrian, Angela and entire family, My deepest condolences on the passing of Boris who was a good friend of my husband, Marco. I wanted to share a story of when Marco and I were married 26 years ago. Boris and George came to our wedding all the way from the East, and Marco was really touched they came. I was told by Boris and George they needed to check me out to make sure their friend Marco will be in good hands. It was a pleasure to meet them both. A few years later we all met again after Marco's Tato died. I will always remember our visit at Sudbury with Boris and Angela and our time at Manitou lake. Although I only saw Boris a few times I know how special a friend he was with Marco. I am very sad for all of you, my prayers are with Boris and with you all. Eternal memory, Rest in peace dear Boris, Lesia and Marco Levytsky - Posted by: Lesia Levytsky (Friend) on: Sep 05, 2016

I was fortunate to have shared some time with Boris while he attended Carleton University. I enjoyed many hours of wonderful conversations and hours of good natured fun. He was a warm and trustworthy gentleman who I am proud to have called a friend. I can only imagine the sorrow of such loss to your family. I offer you peace and love in this difficult time. - Posted by: Ronald Temchuk (Friend) on: Sep 05, 2016

Boris drove me to Toronto from Ottawa one winter and talked the whole time about the Ukraine. How his father and grandfather followed the US army retreat in WWII and left his grandmother and aunts on the farm. How his grandfather raised him in Bloor West Toronto while his parents worked. How he went back to the Ukraine to visit his grandmother and his aunts and how she embraced him as her husband, her son and her grandson. He loaded up his parka with stubbies and snuck in the backdoor of the Fife and Drum and nobody else could do that. - Posted by: Emily Gayle Aitken () on: Sep 05, 2016
