ALASDAIR (BUZZ) GRANT December 4, 1957- September 4, 2016 Bravely and with a light heart, Buzz passed away in Toronto from pancreatic cancer, grateful for what he called a "wonderful life." As a prairie boy in Dauphin, Manitoba, Buzz enjoyed an idyllic childhood riding horses and playing golf with his brother, Dave, and his dear friend, Kirk. He boarded at St. John's Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg for grades 10-12, where he formed close, life-long friendships. He obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and an MBA from Western. As a CA working at Arthur Andersen in Toronto, he also formed close bonds with his colleagues. Always wanting to run his own business, Buzz took the helm at Freeze-Dry Foods Ltd., where his positive attitude and steady, thoughtful approach allowed him to overcome challenges and enjoy many successes over the years. His quiet confidence and competence were undeniable in the work place. Buzz's family brought him great joy. He was proud of his Scottish heritage and learned from his parents, Isobel and Tom, the value of kindness, humility and hard work. In Toronto, he reconnected with his old friend Leslie Riley from Winnipeg SJR days, and they married in 1984. Together, they had four children of whom he was very proud. As a father, he was attentive and a source of consistent support, never missing a dance recital, regatta, play or hockey game. His family meant the world to him, both his own and all the extended Rileys and Grants. He particularly enjoyed his close relationship with his father-in-law, J.D. Riley. Uncle Buzz will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. He was truly honoured to be the officiant at his niece's wedding this past April. Buzz was liked by all who met him and was simply wonderful to be around. He was a solid teammate and great friend to many. His life was full of happy moments enjoying passions like golf, hockey and doing the daily crossword with his dear friend, Ian. He will be remembered for many things, but mostly for his quick wit, ready smile, strength and integrity. Buzz leaves his wife Leslie and their children, Jean, Tom, Shannon and Chris. He is also survived by his mother, Isobel, his brother Dave, sister-in-law Dawna and their children Andrew and Emma. The family would like to express their gratitude to Doctor Yoo-Joung Ko and his team at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, the doctors and nurses on C2 and Doctors Selby and Quigley in palliative care. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Clement's Church, 70 St. Clement's Avenue, Toronto. Reception to follow at the church. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Odette GI site group would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com, 1-800-616-3311.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear Leslie, Tom, Jean, Shannon and Chris I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband and father. What always struck me with Buzz, is that when he met you, he was more interested in finding out what was happening with you than he was in talking about himself. That humble attitude was evident right up to the last time I saw him at Lauren's wedding in April. He was so interested in catching up on my news. He was also very upbeat which made it so easy, despite his grave diagnosis, to have conversation. As i write this I see his sweet smile and the glow of his very authentic soul. May the memories you made over his lifetime comfort you in the dark moments and lift you to some peace as you grieve your loss.
