STEVEN HJALMAR JOHNSON On September 4, 2016 Steven Hjalmar Johnson passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Linda; his daughter Tiffany (Craig) Sheldon; his son Byron (Chelsea) Johnson of Winnipeg; his grandsons, Kiefer, Tanner, Erik and Samuel and a large extended family. Steven was predeceased by his parents Ray and Runa Johnson of Ashern; his brother Harvard Johnson of Ashern, his brother Byron (Beau) Johnson of Grande Prairie, Alberta and his sister Svava Johnson of Vancouver, BC. Steven was born in Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba and was raised in the area of Bay End and Wapah. As a result of the 1952 - 53 floods, his family came to Ashern where his mother taught school and his father worked at various jobs. In his early years Steven moved to BC to work in the logging industry. After that he moved back to the Prairie Provinces where he lived and worked in various towns for the CP Rail Signals. In the early 1960's he moved back to Ashern to drive truck for his Uncle with Ashern Freighters. Later he and his father purchased Ashern Freighters, which he proudly operated from 1966 to 2008. Upon retirement, he spent his winters enjoying the warm weather of Arizona and the game of Shuffleboard. Steven loved meeting people and was well known all over the province. He was an avid sportsman who loved baseball, golf and curling. Steven's kind, generous spirit touched the hearts of all he came in contact with. He was known to many as "The Gentleman Trucker". Funeral arrangements are being handled by Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 in the Ashern Centennial Hall with Warren Erickson officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks you consider donations to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild, c/o Julie Bergner, P.O. Box 721, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0. • One of the finest men to ever walk our planet. I idolized Steven since childhood admiring this "true gentleman" dreaming what it would be like to drive around in those big trucks. Just a few weeks ago I just shared that with him and told him that I would never have dreamed that one day he would be driving for me. I will NEVER forget you my dear bud. "Go Rest High on that Mountain my friend". Sincerest Condolences Linda and to your beautiful family. - Posted by: Lindy & Adeline Johnson (friend) on: Sep 10, 2016
