PEGGY (FLORENCE J.) CARTER (nee WOOLMER) Peggy Carter passed away peacefully at the Lions Personal Care Centre on September 5, 2016, at the age of 94. She is survived by her children and their families: Jeff (Judy) and grandchildren Jonathan and Jennifer; Robin (Susan) and grandchildren Meghan Carter-Lapchuk (Chuck) and great-granddaughter Addison and granddaughter Jillian; Kevin (Patrice Palmerino) and grandchildren Elliot (Allie) and Lewis; and Pam Richert (Vic) and grandson Daniel McIsaac (Christine) and great-grandson Ethan Sieben. Peggy is also survived by her brother-in-law Roland Carter (Joyce) and nieces Vera Comerford (Myles), Verna Mitchell (Bob), Sheila and their families. In England, special cousins Vera Taylor and Valerie Dyer and their families will miss her greatly. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Gordon, her parents Edward and Amelia Woolmer, her sisters Connie (and husband Ted) Bradbury and Ivy Woolmer, and her sisters-in-law May (Frank) Dodds and Lillian (Fabian) Burbeck. Peggy came to Canada as a war bride from England in January of 1946. She and Gordon moved on to their farm near Hartney that spring and over the next 29 years worked hard to successfully raise their family and to support the community and its many activities. Peggy worked as a medical secretary in Hartney and when she and Gordon moved to Winnipeg in 1975, she continued in this work at the Medical Arts Building. She enjoyed travelling, reading, music, theatre, square dancing, lawn bowling with the River Heights Lawn Bowling Club, and playing bridge in many clubs. Throughout her life, Peggy's focus was always her family. She was keenly interested in them, their lives, their careers and activities and their families. She was happiest at gatherings, surrounded by her family. Her keen sense of humour and good-natured teasing of her children and grandchildren are remembered with fondness. Her ability to see the funny side of things lasted through the dementia she experienced in her later years. The family would like to express its thanks to the wonderful staff on the 3rd floor at Lions Personal Care Centre for the loving and sensitive care Mom received. A memorial service is planned in Winnipeg for Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Augustine United Church, 444 River Avenue. A graveside gathering will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Hartney at a later date. If people so wish, donations in Peggy's memory may be made to Lions Personal Care Centre, 320 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2W6 (Att'n: Karen Jashen) or to a charity of choice. • Peggy was such a dear soul. We were privileged to know her and will miss her great sense of humour, her stories and her wonderful love of life. She lived a full life and touched so many people's hearts! Our sincere condolences to the whole Carter extended family and especially Kevin, Patrice, Elliot and Lewis - Posted by: Marilyn and Murray Goode (friends) on: Sep 28, 2016

  • It is like a piece of my history has passed on. I have such wonderful memories of Christmas or New Year's with the Carter's and all those family dinners! I can't begin to describe how lucky I feel to have had such a childhood. Those 2 war brides were the best! I can't be there on Sept 22, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you all. If I were able to come I would have said "Here's to a life well lived and it is an honour to have known you, Auntie Peggy". Love to all of you, Debbie - Posted by: Debbie Maguire (long time family friend) on: Sep 14, 2016

  • Dear Carter family: We are very sorry for your loss! We remember Peggy as a cheerful and regular visitor to Victoria, BC for many consecutive years. She often came in April and October, and for some reason it would almost always snow when she came! Since snow is rare in Victoria, it got to the point that we blamed Peggy! In fact, we had an ongoing neighbourhood joke that if it was snowing, Peggy must be in town or about to arrive! :) She was always friendly to all of us neighbours, and we will surely miss her. • I have missed Peggy the last few times I visited Kevin and Patrice. She and I spent many Christmas holidays together at Kevin and Patrice's. We enjoyed each other's company even to the point of visiting each other's homes--in Winnipeg and Bellingham, Washington. I always marveled at two mothers-in-law getting along so well. I have missed Peggy since she stopped coming to Victoria and will continue to do so. She was a great lady! - Posted by: Camille Palmerino (Patrice's mother) (Family friend) on: Sep 11, 2016

  • We only met Peggy a couple of times but we could tell she met the Velveteen Rabbit criteria for being "real: "It doesn't happen all at once,' said the Skin Horse. 'You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept." We are glad to have become connected with her and her family. - Posted by: Fran and Konrad (In-laws) on: Sep 11, 2016

  • Peggy was always a great sport and terrific addition to our January/ fall birthday parties. Her sense of humour, energy and willingness to participate in our silly ideas like the fascinator tea (on china cups) and book club, or the extravagant tea with menus, four kinds of sandwiches, and scones with the works . Not to mention our IKEA trip to New Westminster complete with Swedish meatballs and Swedish vocalizations from Patrice. Then there was the marathon introduction to the Mama Mia movie at my house when we couldn't get the DVD to start playing. Whatever her family (and their friends) were doing she was there as an active member. And she was loved. We will miss her. - Posted by: Josie, Gene and Aaron Bernhard (friends) on: Sep 10, 2016
